Looking for some short axis drills, for technique primarily and strength secondly
Anybody got any?
BTW, been back in the pool for a couple months, taking it REALLY slow after being laid out for over a year with a back injury. So very grateful to be back in the water
Are you looking for something specific? Just breaststroke drills, just fly drills, kicking drills, combo drills? There are tons and tons of drills if you give me some more specifics I'd be happy to give you some drills.
Richard Quick (of Stanford) has a Championship Swimming Video series out. There's one for fly and one for ***. There's quite a few different drills in them.
A few *** drills that I do:
- kicking on back, with arms overhead, making sure to keep knees in water (*** kick is about hamstrings, not hip flexors)
- arm sculling to get a feel for the water, with a buoy to keep legs still
- drilling 2x kick, 1x full stroke, focusing on a long glide
- pulling breaststroke, with full arm stroke and dolphin kick (using fins)
I love those drills, though I've never done the last one. I've experimented with weights a few times. Like, I've done the 2x kick + 1 full stroke with a weight belt on, which really helps you focus on where your hips are. I've also used small 2.5lb weights during the arm pull--it strengthens your arms and helps you focus on streamlining during the glide. I wouldn't recommend doing that one too much, but it's a good exercise. I've also done the vertical kick drill using the breaststroke kick with a weight belt on. That one is fun.
Hi FlyQueen!
I'd be interested in short axis drills. Right now I do isolation (kick only, R arm, L arm, all together) drills plus dolphining in every position I can think of, then timing myself in full stroke over distances of up to 100 yds with variable intervals and iterations. I just make it up. Any refinements I'd be glad to hear of. :)
Thanks!

My fav dolphin kick/fly drill is one I found on the goswim website: fly spin drill. You can do it with fins, MF or without. I do 25s underwater with my MF. Push off, two dolphin kicks on stomach, two on right side, two on back, two on left side, repeat.
I also like the caterpillar drill (lie in a Y position, press down with chest to mimic fly undulation, very slow drill) and the nemo drill (4-5 dolphin kicks UW, 1 stroke, repeat) for fly.
This is exactly what I love! I love this drill, butwe call is the "four quarter kick". We go 4 kicks on each quarter (front, side, back, side)... You can definitely see some results in the undulation as well as the efficiency of the kick!
Glenn says it's effective doing 2-4 kicks.
They are awesome! I also do "four point shooters" where I do 4 x (4 x 25) where the entire 25 is on the stomach, side, back, side.

Ummm, let's see; right now I'm looking for combo drills and *** drills, and kicking drills. MY *** technique needs work and I am doing low level dry-land to work on rebuilding my strength. I don't want any fly drills right now because I will be tempted to try them. I know my back and my overall core have a way to go before I can try the fly again. But I'd like to start limbering up with some dolphin drills :weightlifter:
thanks for the video tip aqualung :)

Absolutely! It's good to hear that we are on the same page with that one! I'll have to try the two/three kick four quarter drill! Thanks for suggesting the change in the kicks...I am curious to see how my swimmers react to that change! Guess we'll find out tonight!
