this will be my first 10k and I want to know what others have done to train, my training right now is 2 swims a week each a 3miles, then 2 a week each time I swim 7miles. I also do some weight lifting to for the arms. The other question is the race said you need to have a feeder. So how should I train the person that is doing the feedings, Do the feeding stations get crowed? then is the best time to feed, during how many miles. If any one has any info to give me I would be so happy!
  • I agree with lump, try to go for greater consistency in yardage per workout. So perhaps try starting with four or five 3-4000 meter workouts per week, then take up the yardage as you feel more comfortable. I also like to work on a lot of 100 and 200's at pace and really push the pace to the limits of my comfort level. The goal being to swim say 50+ 100's on a challenging send off with the times getting faster throughout the set and over time. As for feedings, the last race I did I only told my sister that she would be wading out with my gatorade about 5 min before the race started and she had no problems. Race organizers usually talk the feeders through what they need to know. All you have to do is give them what you want to eat and give them an idea of when to expect you at the feeding station. Best of luck!! Which race are you doing?

I would swim alot more often than 2x/week. I depends on your goals (just make it, be competitive, etc), but I was top 3 in all my 5K (and a 4.5 mile) last summer and I was swimming 4-6000 3-5 times a week. I would suggest swimming more often and drop the yardage, then maybe do one long workout a week...something along those lines. Weights are okay if you are doing them in the proper manner (high rep, low weight), otherwise the added muscle isn't helping you. I would also through in some cardio a few times a week, be it running, biking, eliptical, whatever. For feedings, I don't worry about it if the swim is 2:15 or less. Feedings will really depend on the format of the swim and whether its a loop with a feeding station or you have a kayaker/support boat.

Really want to get a little faster though so should I cut back some of my yards or keep it the same.?

I am doing one in Spring harbor Michigan, they said something about a floating platform for the feeders. what should I eat or drink? when would be best to feed ? right at the first few miles or close to the end. thanks for the speed drill stuff that is what I want is my pace to be good, not place but just not come in last lol:)
  • Feed ? Maybe drink. We go most of 1 1/2 hours of swim pool practice without drinking , let alone feeding.
  • Aurora, It sounds like you are doing the Harbor Springs, Little Traverse Bay, 10k in Michigan? Many on this board have done that swim and could tell you what to expect, how organizers and swimmers have handled feeding stations in past years, and so forth. Perhaps for clarity you could start a new thread specifying the swim to solicit useful suggestions and help?

Chaos what were you thinking besides sports drinks for feeding ?I really want to know if there is somthing I could actully eat while swimming. i personally like to feed quickly... that means liquid. the act of tearing open a gel pack requires more time than i like to stop for; still, i'll take a couple along on swims over 5k "just in case". i know others that like to mix things up. oatmeal, marshmallows, bananas, cookies, m&m's, crackers and even potato chips have been used by friends of mine on long swims. play around with some different things on your training swims to see what works best for you.

hey orca 1946 dont know if you know but most 10k your almost always required to do feedings so you don't get dehydrated, also I always drink sports drinks every time I swim 7 miles in the pool cause you would not have the enegry to do a continuses 7 miles with out it. but thanks for the un helpful info. acutlly thank you most every one for the un helpful info except vivibebe and choas. Will start my new theard now and hopfull get some good info thanks!
