old school speedo goggles

I see that you can't get the old style of speedo goggles (big roundish lenses with foam pads, plastic noisepiece with adjustment notches, rubber strap). I'm kind of disappointed because that was the kind I always used, and my current pair are wearing out. I tried a couple new styles of goggles that I'm not completely happy with, like 'speedo vanquisher'. what exactly was wrong with the old style and why did they have to go and change it? they were cheap, comfortable, functional, and you could get replacement parts like new straps when the old one wore out.

I see that you can't get the old style of speedo goggles ........snip.......... they were cheap, comfortable, functional, and you could get replacement parts like new straps when the old one wore out. And that's exactly the reason why they stopped making them. So You (or anyone) would have to buy new (more expensive, less reliable), more expensive ones.............. and more often.

Actually I think the speedo vanquishers will be okay. Instead of an adjustable nosepiece, it has 4 different size nosepieces. I popped out the existing piece and moved to the next larger, and the fit is better. Also I may check out those swedish goggles I've seen people wearing. The ones with no foam or rubber seal of any type, just plastic eyepieces, a piece of string for the nosepiece, and a strap. Pretty cheap and they seem servicable, I just wonder how well they work and if they leak at all.

I'm temporarily using some women's vanquishers. I had leaking issues until I adjusted the nose piece unevenly (maybe I'm unsymetrical) and it helped. I'm not a big vanquisher or speedo fan - I loved my TYR T-72 Femmes which I crushed the other day.

I think the new goggles are way better than the old ones. The silicone straps don't deteriorate like the old rubber ones did and the neoprene gasket is much better than the old foam, which tended to pack out after a few months use. At this point it seems like the lifespan of Vanquishers is limited by the lenses getting so scratched up that they fog up too easily. David, if you don't like Vanquishers definitely give the Swedes a try. I personally don't like them, but lots of people swear by them.

I know what you mean. I've tried a number of different types, and none fit well at all. I ended up buying 4-5 pairs a couple of years ago, now I'm on my last pair I think. You can get them off the internet, or at least you used to be able to get them off the net as of last year.

I seem to be building a collection of goggles. The aqua spheres are my latest and they seem promising, although I haven't found the right balance between adjustment and comfort to keep the water out all the time. The old speedos were definitely the best.
  • Also, try Canada. I love my Speedo Ultravision goggles. Everyone else hates them. But I love 'em. But they recently stopped making them in the US. But they are still being made in Canada. -Rick

When I swam in high school, I used to use a silicone sealant around the foam part to try and get a few extra workouts out of them (I was cheap).

I would try Swedish goggles if I were you. Remember not to give up on them if they feel uncomfortable. They will probably take around a week to get used to. I usually use Speedo Speed Sockets and they are great, but they cost about $25. I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Rick - If you're interested, I may have a couple of pairs of Ultravision goggles. They used to be the only style that would stay on when I dove off the blocks. I now wear Tyr Racetechs instead; they fit me better than the Ultravisions. If you're interested, contact me at AnnaLea(at)usms(dot)org. Anna Lea
