I started swimming in the mornings with the masters team this week, and man, am I hungry!! What does everyone eat for breakfast? I feel like I'm not eating as well as I did before I started swimming in the mornings, and I don't really know what I should be eating. I'm hungry all the time. I used to have Special K for breakfast, but it doesn't last at all after swimming. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
I need protein after a swim to hold me through. If I am working a day shift and just eat cereal I am totally empty by 10 and ready to eat the desk! Oatmeal will hold me but its better to have an egg, or cheese or something with protein then I am not hungry for a long time.
Mmmmmm....oatmeal.
The difference in me is, I'm a culinary student, so when I have class at 6:30 in the morning (every morning except weekends), I eat during kitchens, around 8:45 am every day.
I eat oatmeal around 5, a little of whatever we make in kitchens at 8:30-ish(seriously, prime rib and potatoes last week for a day), then I eat lunch with friends around 1, again before practice at 5, and usually again when I get home at 8.
I've found, especially with swimming, it's good to eat every few hours or so, granola bars, fruit, things like that, otherwise you get really hungry and eat a lot all at once.
I for one, don't mind eating constantly. And you're right, special K just doesn't do a thing for swimming appetites.
PEANUT BUTTER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I swear by it. If I swim in the morning, I have one piece of toast with PB. Afterward I have oatmeal. If I swim at noon or later in the day I still have a piece of bread with PB. I've tried other things - yogurt, power gel, etc. and they just don't work. I once bonked half way through a workout because I had a power gel and not the typical PB sandwich.
I also graze through the day; I have to eat every two hours anyway.:p
I swim early mornings. My workout takes a little over an hour.
Pool opens at 5:30. If I were to eat a really heavy breakfast (which I do AFTER the swim) I would have to get up at 3:30 and eat right away to let it settle enough before I get in the pool.
I get up at 4:30. I eat a banana, a cup of coffee, a glass of fruit juice (different juices from day to day depending on what's in the fridge) and my morning vitamins. That gives me some simple carbs and lots of fluid (and a little caffiene) to keep me going through the workout, all without being too heavy in my stomach as I work out. I drink a 32-ounce bottle of water spaced throughout my workout.
I usually get home within a half hour of getting out of the pool. By then I am profoundly famished. I eat a full breakfast and lots more fluids. At this point it is about 7:00-7:30. And that lasts me adequately until lunch.
I also swim at night instead of the morning. If I swam in the morning and ate first I'd throw up in the pool. I have to have a fairly empty stomach when I work out.
If I were to swim in the morning I'd have to be in the pool at like 4:30 to get a decent work out in. Which would mean getting up at like 3:45 - not gonna happen!
Two toasted Eggos waffles sandwiched together over a spread of whipped cream cheese and blueberry jam. ...after practice. I only want to see my breakfast once. :)
A mug off coffee with some milk is all that's necessary. And a few swigs of water. But that's it. ... It's better to be the sail boat in the pool than the barge....What can I say. we live in a coastal community.
Apples are great they also will give you energy - same effect as coffee. I eat oatmeal. Usually the instant kind and usually two packets. If I'm still hungry after that I munch on fruits and veggies.
Hi ya...
I used to have one of those zone bars before the workout (like 30 mins before, on the drive there) and then have a banana or yoghurt (or even an Israeli-style breakfast salad) at home or later and that seemed to do the trick. Remember to stay hydrated, though!

Some people in the early morning group don't eat breakfast, but there is no way I could do that. I have a bowl of cereal (great grains with pecans) with some extra pecans sprinkled on top and a glass of iced tea. If it's cold out (say below 45) I will have hot tea instead of iced tea.
A problem with me is that when I have breakfast at 5 AM I want to eat lunch really early (like about 9:30). Sometimes I will have a little snack during the day when I swim early.
