I started swimming in the mornings with the masters team this week, and man, am I hungry!! What does everyone eat for breakfast? I feel like I'm not eating as well as I did before I started swimming in the mornings, and I don't really know what I should be eating. I'm hungry all the time. I used to have Special K for breakfast, but it doesn't last at all after swimming. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

It depends on how long I swim in the morning. If I do two hour practices like this morning I bring that power bar junk (gel) to the pool and have it in the middle of the workout and then when I am done I eat fruit a low fat granola bar and drink loads of liquids. I also have veggies cut up so that I can munch on them. I also have V-8 in my fridge at work and a glass of that warts off starvation. I find that grazing all day long in little quantities helps. I don't get super hungry at any point.

Ain't that the truth! I'm just about to start masters' swimming again after a break, but I'm facing a *** biopsy- I figure I'll swim until the op. and take it from there....

Training on an empty fuel tank? In the morning?
Or any other time of the day?
For me, a type 1 diabetic, fuel (ie food/carbs) is vital. You could say I have a very close association with how and what works for me.
My body does not discrimminate what type of carbs I eat, only I need them.
However it (my body's need and sensitivity to fuel) is the most truthful monitor. Too many carbs and I can't train. Not enough and I am also not able to work out, although not enough is a wee bit easier to manage than 1/2 a slice of bread .. ie 7 gms of carbs too much could mean I can't train just now. Wait till tomorrow may be the option I have.
I have a slim window of opportunity where I am able, or where my blood sugars will allow, for me to train.
Yes I have to be very intune with what and how much, what type of carb and protein I eat. And I can only eat 3 times/meals a day.
You see those who have a functioning pancreas, the organ that secretes insulin when ever you eat, no matter how many carbs, don't need to worry. You can eat, or not, train any way. (the outcome on an empty fuel tank will show)
So I train at 7:10 am. This means my alarm goes off at 5:45am. I get up, test my sugar level. (Every time I test my blood sugar levels, requires yet another stab on my finger (a $1.00 each time per test strip in my meter when I stab) , Hopefully it will 'allow' me to go swimming. I inject my insulin (rapid acting). I make my breakfast of 30 gms of carbs... a small plate of porridge, or a piece of toast and a boiled egg, + 1/2 cup of youghurt. I have to eat 90 mins before my workout so the peak of my insulin is over before training. Otherwise with too much circulating insulin and not -digested- enough- breakfast, I would soon be at the bottom of the pool. Not a pleasant thought.
I then have to test before I get in, as sometimes for some frustrating reason, either my insulin, or, my very boring but works for me breakfast, has had a 'bad hair start to the morning'. If for some reason my fuel and insulin has not matched, then I can't swim. End of Story, but there is always tomorrow.
The up side, when I am able to train will make each day of training counts and will work hard. I know exactly how much each workout burns in type of fuel. I have to test my levels every 45 mins while swimming to enure my levels are good. Or sooner if I fall off the pace clock, or my coach notices something!
I cannot train on 'an empty fuel tank'. I must also replenish my fuel tank after workout. (a jab with a needle, one to test my levels and another jab/injection with insulin and carefully measured fuel/carbs and protein that I then eat).
For me no breakfast is not an option. Waking up late, chugging a coffee and burning rubber to get to training just can't happen.
I love to swim. Swimming is what keeps me going.
Fuel/food and my body have a great respect.
I look at food like this. It is like gas for my car. I only need enough to get me from place A to place B. I do not need to fill up every time. I always carry a spare tank (ie measured carbs as required). And I do not need to stop at every gas bar, but I do need to refuel after a workout so my body can re fuel, re charge and not be compromised.

Happy Training.

I take a cup of cooked cereal with fruits 1 hr before the workout. And about 30 minutes after workout, I take some carbonhydrates, like a baggle for instance. I found this helps my blood sugar level during the workout as well as replenishes energy afterwards.
