Training Plan for Nationals

Getting my training plan together for Nationals and just wanted to poll others to see what you're doing as comparison. Thinking of periodization - breaking into 6-week training blocks with each one focusing on a particular area (strength, endurance, speed, etc)....Keeping yards in the 4500-6000 range for each workout, 5x week...incorporating some Dry Lands as well. Periodic in-season meets to gauge training. Any thoughts? How are others preparing?
  • From the end of the SCM season until 15wk before Nats I'll swim long slow stuff to give my knees and shoulders time to recover.I'll also do moderate weights.!5 wk out I will build intensity for 6 wk,very intense for 6 wk then 3 wk taper.
  • That seems like a lot of yardage for most Masters but again it does depend on what your events are. Make sure you get the most out of these days as you can. Garbage yardage helps no one. The important thing is to make sure you get enough SLEEP the week before Nats. For me at least, that's a huge variable.
  • Attending practice and focusing on technique while checking in with those who help me. Since I'm new to competitive swimming I also entered the local ymca circuit for meet practice. I need to figure out DRYLAND and other stuff but I'm a busy mom, run my own business and help out with my club & Lmsc so I'm going to be star struck by the great masters swimmers and to have fun! And maybe impress myself( a little).

Which left me overtrained, drained and SLOW! I find 3000-3500 yards just right with much technique focus..I love the 200 ***! Good luck and keep checking in!
  • I love the 200 ***! :banana::bliss::bouncing::cheerleader: .
  • I have never been to USMS Nationals. I hope to go to the USMS Summer Nationals in 2013 in Mission Viejo CA, unfortunately its a week before IGLA in Seattle. I can do one not both. Regarding Nationals, based on the few meets, in which I have participated, I don't believe I would do anything different than I am already doing. I would taper the week before, of course, but nothing specifically different. I have been told I am a distance swimmer. My normal workouts are usually in the 4000 range. I have registered for the SCM Championship in Long Beach. I registered for the 1500, 800, and 400 Freestyle, and the 400, 200, and 100 IM's. A couple of months ago I added more butterfly to my workouts. I have also incorporated 800 and 500 IM's. I workout 5-6 times per week. I have personally found Gatorade "01 Prime", and Gatorade "03 Recover" to help me when I compete, or after swimming a long distance. I workout on my own without a coach. I have fellow swimmer's, Masters and non-Masters, and Lifeguards, who critique my swims, and the learnings from the USMS Blogs and Forums to guide me. Regards, Thank you,
  • Check out some of the blogs and see either of these workout threads: High-Intensity Thread by Leslie -- if you're aiming for sprints High-Volume Thread by me (sorry for the self-promotion) -- if you're aiming for longer stuff Both Leslie and I try to periodize the swim training towards Nationals. I'll start up a plan on the HVT thread in mid-December targeting towards Indy Nationals. That swimming volume seems high if you're aiming for 200s and under ... and even more than enough for the distance stuff. If you have the time for it, go for it.

Depends what events you're training for Months out I usually train middle distance with some sprint then add more speed and strength and I get closer then a final layer of rest I tend to do one or 2 meets a season. I prefer 2. You can do meet-like swims in practice.
  • Those of us that do state/nats. do a team run workout of 3300 - 4200 yes. / session. 3 weeks b 4 a big meet we taper in our best events.

Regards, Thank you, I'd certainly describe you as a distance swimmer on this basis. 100 IM must feel like a splash and dash!
