Getting my training plan together for Nationals and just wanted to poll others to see what you're doing as comparison. Thinking of periodization - breaking into 6-week training blocks with each one focusing on a particular area (strength, endurance, speed, etc)....Keeping yards in the 4500-6000 range for each workout, 5x week...incorporating some Dry Lands as well. Periodic in-season meets to gauge training. Any thoughts? How are others preparing?
I'm training for the 100/200 back and fly and the 100/200 IM for Indy Nats, and training for the 50/100/200 free for meets up till then.
So far I've only been training for back and free, but will pick up fly in January. From January-March, I'll steadily increase the yardage and intensity until I'm hammering it the second half of March. Ideally I'll be swimming 6 times a week, 3x2 hour practices and 3x1 hour practices, hitting a 3500-4500 per hour. Come April, I'll step down the yardage a bit, but focus on high quality practices (lots of technique work, stuff like that), with the last two weeks before Nats being a full taper.
I'm starting up a 3x per week half hour dryland program in January, too, and will continue that through mid April. Depending on if they ever finish building the weight room at work, I might throw that in there once or twice a week, too.
