Getting my training plan together for Nationals and just wanted to poll others to see what you're doing as comparison. Thinking of periodization - breaking into 6-week training blocks with each one focusing on a particular area (strength, endurance, speed, etc)....Keeping yards in the 4500-6000 range for each workout, 5x week...incorporating some Dry Lands as well. Periodic in-season meets to gauge training. Any thoughts? How are others preparing?
I have never been to USMS Nationals. I hope to go to the USMS Summer Nationals in 2013 in Mission Viejo CA, unfortunately its a week before IGLA in Seattle. I can do one not both.
Regarding Nationals, based on the few meets, in which I have participated, I don't believe I would do anything different than I am already doing. I would taper the week before, of course, but nothing specifically different.
I have been told I am a distance swimmer. My normal workouts are usually in the 4000 range. I have registered for the SCM Championship in Long Beach. I registered for the 1500, 800, and 400 Freestyle, and the 400, 200, and 100 IM's.
A couple of months ago I added more butterfly to my workouts. I have also incorporated 800 and 500 IM's. I workout 5-6 times per week.
I have personally found Gatorade "01 Prime", and Gatorade "03 Recover" to help me when I compete, or after swimming a long distance.
I workout on my own without a coach. I have fellow swimmer's, Masters and non-Masters, and Lifeguards, who critique my swims, and the learnings from the USMS Blogs and Forums to guide me.

Thank you,
