Any comments on the latest USMS Swimmer magazine and Nadine Day's pullouts?
I for one thought the entire 5 pages were excellent, all the tips great.
The photos are very clear, and Nadine has great form.
Well done!!

Great article...the Anchor points tip is helping me get a much better dolphin kick in.
Starts, turns and pullouts still cost me a lot of time.
But I always want more:bow:
I know Allen loves it and many others do it, the pulldown hunch.
There should be a 3g, right after 3f many great breaststrokers hunch the shoulders together, and the hands end up inside the thighs. This hunch narrows the body restriction enough that some swimmers feel like they are shooting forwards.
Important that this does not stay in the hunch position too long, because the next step actually has negative acceleration.
Step 4a should be done explosively, as fast as possible as the bringing the heels to the butt slows you down to nearly a stop. Note the angle of Nadines knees to her body. Her very wide angle is perfect. Many swimmers knees drop straight down, nothing like a huge boat anchor.
The only thing I would add would be an above water shot of 4a. The only time narrow knees are good is during this step, the least resistance the less stopping. Some great breaststrokers actually have their heels touching while they bring the heels up, so that everything is inside the body width.
Also step 4b, many great breaststrokers do not point their feet backwards as Nadine does. So long as the feet are within the body width they are not not slowing down.
Again great job Chris Colburn, Nadine Day and photographer Peter Bick
Wayne, I have a question. I thought that the rule for breaststroke was that you had to do a two-hand touch with the hands in the same horizontal plane. If you have one hand touch 6 inches lower than the other when you turn, will you get DQed?
Wayne hasn't replied so I will. The interpretation of the rules doesn't require the hands to be in the same horizontal plane during the touch at turns or the finish. Only during the swim are the hands required to move in the same horizontal plane. It is allowed to have the hands at any orientation during the touch as long as both hands touch simultaneously.
Thank you for getting it right.
Breaststroke has always been controlled by the rules, so you need to read them, and use them to your advantage.
Both butterfly and breaststroke turns can be slightly faster (0ne to two tenths) by touching with one hand lower than the other. Just make sure you touch both at the same time.
On the subject of Swimmer, did anyone else notice the error in the 5 fast facts. They said free is any stroke but fly, back and ***. That only applies to Medleys so that 4 distict strokes are swum. Free events are just that, free, any stroke goes. Here is a question for the rule wonks, does the 15M underwater rule apply to open water events?
In my totally unbiased opinion, I thought the article turned out GREAT!! :woot:
Unfortunately, I've only seen the PDF version. We still haven't received it in the mail yet and I think that Chris is going to storm the Post Office if it doesn't show up soon!
