Any comments on the latest USMS Swimmer magazine and Nadine Day's pullouts?
I for one thought the entire 5 pages were excellent, all the tips great.
The photos are very clear, and Nadine has great form.
Well done!!
This was a first class article.I definitely agree with Wayne about the "hunch",but I call it shrug and bring my hands to my side, not between my legs. One correction, you don't need to wait to break the surface to begin your pull. You must break the surface before your insweep,so you want to strart the pull while still underwater and use it to help break the surface.
BTW: when did you receive your issue of USMS Swimmer? I am wondering if USMS has my current address.
Thanx,
I received my copy about a week ago. Strange, I'm usually the last to get these.
Anyway, I thought it was a great article, with excellent photos to describe the steps.
However, I refuse to incorporate any fly into my ***. If it costs me a second, so be it, I don't believe in the principle, and I'm nowhere near records, when I swim I compete against myself. Now it is just one kick, next it will be the whole thing fly arms with *** kick, or fly kick with *** pull? No thanks.
The fly kick in the pullout was hard for me to do, because I was always told NOT to do it for fear of the DQ. But once I started doing it... weeee! :agree:
It is A LOT faster to do the fly kick in my opinion- that's why it used to be called cheating!
I wonder how much more "evolved" breaststroke can get?
If you are doing the pulldown right, the fly kick should come almost naturally (as the strength from your arms pulling down initially, should make you undulate- in a fly sorta way!)
I haven't received my magazine yet either...
Wayne, I have a question. I thought that the rule for breaststroke was that you had to do a two-hand touch with the hands in the same horizontal plane. If you have one hand touch 6 inches lower than the other when you turn, will you get DQed?
I was waiting to see if anyone would comment on her feet leaving the wall for the push off. It might be that the staged photo was not what Nadine does in a race for the push.
Maybe I have been fortunate in talking with so many great breaststrokers, but having your feet parallel to the waters surface indicates you spent EXTRA time turning from being on the *** to being on your side.
I teach a *** to back with a twist turn. You touch on the ***, or slightly less by having one hand 6 inches lower than the other hand.
You then pull you feet up and turn onto your back. Your feet plant nearly vertically.
As soon as the arms come together you twist towards the *** again. You MUST be past the verticle toward the *** BEFORE the feet leave the wall.
Most breaststrokers feet will be about a 45 degree from the waters surface.

Understood, but after I hijacked a Thread Fort was nice enough to explain some benefit to doing fly (Core Strength) so once this season is over I plan to start working on it.
I have too little pool time now.
Again great job Chris Colburn, Nadine Day and photographer Peter Bick
Yay for coachchris!!! :applaud: He knows his stuff. Even I read that article closely.
I didn't tape them so I can't check, but I could swear Brendan Hansen did not use the Kitijima Cheat dolphin kick during the last World and Dual in the Pool races.
I personally hate the rule, even if it is slightly faster. It is a butterfly motion, not a breaststroke motion.
