Half-Strokes: To Take or Not To Take

I know it's always better to try and reach the wall at full extension but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. So in that case is it better to take the half stroke, or just keep gliding and hope for the best? (In terms of competition and practice)

always glide but you should try to set your self up a few strokes before the wall so that this doesn't happen.

Lately it's been happening in all my strokes, except back. I'm working on stopping it though. I know it's better to not take them at all, but sometimes it seems inevitable. My momentum stops at T usually when I run into this problem. I usually take an extra little pull/kick/thing when I'm doing ***, cuz even lunging I'd lose a lot of momentum. For free, I do take a little kick but I wasn't sure if that is legal or not. Is it?

For free, I do take a little kick but I wasn't sure if that is legal or not. Is it? For free, pretty much anything's legal, except pulling on lane lines, swimming in someone else's lane, etc. So it's perfectly legal to kick into the wall on free. Same thing on back, as long as you stay on your back. Fly you can also dolphin kick in to the wall, as long as you don't do a *** pull with your arms. *** is the only one where you can't take an extra kick - one kick per pull.

You have to be careful in breaststroke. The stroke rules require the kick to follow the pull. There can never be consecutive kicks or pulls. So if you are short and don't want to lunge or glide in - you must use a short pull to reach the wall.
  • This is always a hard call, especially for you breaststrokers. :thhbbb: For breaststroke, if you're going to glide, glide as hard as you can or lunge into the wall so you don't lose too much momentum. Don't coast slowly into the wall. If you think you will coast, take a half stroke instead. Get your feet up quickly and rocket back off the wall as fast as possible. At least that's what I'd do. For fly, I'd be more inclined to glide hard. Half stroke fly is dreadful. Stud: You must be on the wrong thread. I may have to post your brag on Donna's SR to NSR thread.
  • It also depends on the stroke; there is no half-stroke in breaststroke. Also instead of gliding into the wall, I’d suggest lunging for it. Good extension and a couple of streamline dolphin kicks (not advised in Breaststroke) should maintain speed if you are just a bit short of the wall.

I think glide...b/c you slow even more if u surface...opinion really...as I always hit the wall exactly at full stretch and just before my speed slows... OK LOL half pull is ok but can mess ur turn
  • Is that how your toe got "broken"?:joker: Most definately could be. I have no depth perception without my contacts...and I dont' wear them when I swim. Maybe I'll just close my left eye and use my right only. :) I've never worn my contacts when I swim though, so I think by now I would be used to it. I'd like to think I"m getting faster and going farther and my body just isn't used to it yet. :D
  • Fly never half stroke. ***,take an extra pull if you are really short and can do a full pull.If you have to do that make sure your recovery is REALLY fast.
  • Warren is right that you have to set yourself up several strokes out. Depth perception is important in doing this for breaststroke. Since I have been racing with prescription goggles, I have not had the problem of 1/2 stroke on breaststroke. Could your vision be a part of the problem?
