Half-Strokes: To Take or Not To Take

I know it's always better to try and reach the wall at full extension but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. So in that case is it better to take the half stroke, or just keep gliding and hope for the best? (In terms of competition and practice)

You have to be careful in breaststroke. The stroke rules require the kick to follow the pull. There can never be consecutive kicks or pulls. So if you are short and don't want to lunge or glide in - you must use a short pull to reach the wall.
