Half-Strokes: To Take or Not To Take

I know it's always better to try and reach the wall at full extension but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. So in that case is it better to take the half stroke, or just keep gliding and hope for the best? (In terms of competition and practice)

For free, I do take a little kick but I wasn't sure if that is legal or not. Is it? For free, pretty much anything's legal, except pulling on lane lines, swimming in someone else's lane, etc. So it's perfectly legal to kick into the wall on free. Same thing on back, as long as you stay on your back. Fly you can also dolphin kick in to the wall, as long as you don't do a *** pull with your arms. *** is the only one where you can't take an extra kick - one kick per pull.
