Half-Strokes: To Take or Not To Take

I know it's always better to try and reach the wall at full extension but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. So in that case is it better to take the half stroke, or just keep gliding and hope for the best? (In terms of competition and practice)

Lately it's been happening in all my strokes, except back. I'm working on stopping it though. I know it's better to not take them at all, but sometimes it seems inevitable. My momentum stops at T usually when I run into this problem. I usually take an extra little pull/kick/thing when I'm doing ***, cuz even lunging I'd lose a lot of momentum. For free, I do take a little kick but I wasn't sure if that is legal or not. Is it?
