I know it's always better to try and reach the wall at full extension but sometimes it doesn't always work out that way. So in that case is it better to take the half stroke, or just keep gliding and hope for the best?

It also depends on the stroke; there is no half-stroke in breaststroke. Also instead of gliding into the wall, I’d suggest lunging for it. Good extension and a couple of streamline dolphin kicks (not advised in Breaststroke) should maintain speed if you are just a bit short of the wall.
