Hello Guys, i need help with my 50 free BAD. My fastest time was 23.39 Which i went in Feburary of 2011 and in my recent meet about two weeks ago i went a 23.60 which im very dissapointed with.
I have the video from the meet because i know my freestyle isnt perfect and i would love your guys opinion on what i can do to get better i hope to go between 22.4 and 22.7 by March- April of 2012
The quality isnt that good since it was recorded with my Iphone 4 and it is turned to the side for some reason.

Im in Lane six.. but From the angle of the video, Lane 3 ( african american kid)
Assuming your target race is also short course, I think you could work that wall a lot harder. You get over pretty fast but you don't appear to push off especially hard and you don't stay under very long. You want to time your breakout just right for you, and not waste a lot of time kicking if it's slower for you than swimming, but you may be able to streamline better so that you get more from the legs off the wall.

23.xx is a very good time. You shouldn't be disappointed.
I'm stuck in your boat right now too. My best time in HS was 23.10 in the 50 free. Now, a junior in college swimming recreationally, I still cannot beat 23.10.
Granted, I don't have the best timing equipment at the moment, just a lifeguard with a stopwatch at the YMCA. One day, I was able to go to one of the schools in my consortium and bribe the swim coach to let me borrow the use of touch pads/timing system. What was my time?... 23.50.
So yeah, if anyone has any recommendations, let me know too.

Do you find you are faster on top than underwater? You came up faster than most off the dive, but then came up later than most off the turn.
Figure out which works best for you, than plan on working that aspect at both the start and the turn.
From what I could observe, it seems you are faster on top, but only you know if your legs died at the turn, causing your slow breakout.
Keep up the good work!

On the dive i attempted to do 3 dolfin kicks and then go straight into the flutter kick but i had messed up and did 2 instead. My wall was verryyyy slow and lazy i didnt get a good push off. but for some reason at my breakout my hands move very fast, but then it slows down for the rest of the race. instead of my hands moving fast throughout the whole 50 like the other competitors in the race. My stroke was like a 1-2 pause. 1-2 pause.
In the 100 I went 52.2 ( horrible) and I went 1:57 in the 200 free( horrible)
Like Brian said there's context, there's facts about each race.
What sort of training did you do coming into the meet?
What was the order of the races at the meet?
How much rest did you get between each event?
Did you make any mistakes in any of your races?
There's many more pertinant questions.
Focus on the process. Your times at meets are just outcomes. Learn from them and improve. Most of the time in swimming, you get what you give.
If you REALLY want to swim faster at meets
train harder further faster more often.
TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN
the magic happens in practice, day in day out
Use your disappointment to get pissed off and determined to train harder and faster than ever before
There's a story of desire, disappointment, recommitment, & accomplishment.
Tip 242 "Never Let Yourself Feel This Bad Ever Again"
You can Swim Faster Faster
Don't be so quick to label your performances.
Those meet results are part of your journey.
Prepare for the events you'll race at your big meet
Swim & kick fast in practice & HAVE FUN
You were 15 strokes down and 19 on the way back.
I thought your turn was excellent, but you could have kicked out a bit farther underwater. You could also have kicked out a bit farther on your start. Those underwaters take some of the effort off the arms and I think you can come back faster with fresher arms.
I would try to engage the kick more. Do alot of sprint kicking. See the swimmer above you. He is making white water all the way back while your kick is fading a bit.
I've found it also takes concentration to keep a high elbow pull during a 50 and I think that can help as well.
Bottom line....it was a great swim and you can/will get faster. Wish I was that fast!
I think your stroke looks pretty good, but it's going to be tough to pick up anything subtle from this video. It's possible you could benefit from entering your arms slightly wider--but, again, hard to say for sure just from this video.
You also come up faster than just about everyone on the start. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it does suggest you could work on your underwater kicking. And you do appear to lose a little ground on the turn. Be sure not to lift your head going into the wall. Work on full speed turns to get the timing down. One drill I've seen that's useful is running down the deck a few steps then diving into the wall lane and doing a turn. That way you're going at race speed or even slightly faster. Be careful doing this, though!

It's frustrating to put in a year of work for no improvement, but every swim has context. You're a high school swimmer, right? Was that 23.39 from the championship season, rested and shaved? When I was in high school I went 23.1 in the prelims of a championship meet and dropped to 22.3 the next day when I shaved. No guarantee of anything like that happening to you; I'm just saying there's a context.
Anyway your technique looks solid. You might be pulling too far back and not releasing from the pull soon enough underwater. You have high distance per stroke but this technique problem is a common way of artificially increasing DPS. Do a lot of sprints experimenting with an earlier release. Try to get the balance right between DPS and turnover.

I tapered and shaved for my YMCA states and went 23.50, then the following week I went the 23.39

And right now you are training hard and unshaved? You could have a lot more speed in the bank right now than you realize.
