Hello everyone. I am a 39 yr female who would like to swim to get back in shape. Next year our local swimteam will be opening a masters class and I plan to join. I was wondering if there were any basic beginners work out I could do now till the masters class starts sometime in the new year. I was a lifeguard and swim instructor in my teens/20's so I am familiar with all the strokes. Just overweight and have no idea what to do when im swimming laps to start getting conditioned. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

No love the encouragement, another reason Im joining a masters group 1. for guidance 2. motivation if I pay out to join will not wont not to go, then will also have team mates to encourage me on those days one would be tempted to say hmm ill skip today lol. I just need to get the lingo down so i know what it is they are telling me to do.
Thanks
Kim

Be careful...that's what I started in October now I'm going to a meet in January.
I just got in the pool and did 1/4 mile for a week or so to get used to it again. Then went to 1/2 's; then up to 3/4 once; then out to 1 mile.
I'm no expert but I found just getting the endurance back up gave me confidence to work on strokes and now looking at working out for a meet etc. I'm 37 so we're in the same ballpark for age.
I'd just get swimming for now, so those smaller muscles thought they could hide behind the bigger ones forever get a chance to get used to working for a living again. :joker:
Sorry it's not a workout but I hope you didn't object to some encouragement!

This is also my first week back and I am doing the following currently
200 warmup
4x100 15 breaths
100 ***
4x75 10 breaths
100 ***
4x50 5 breaths
100 ***
4x25 2-3 breaths
100 ***
200 cool down
Total workout1800
I takes me about 50 minutes, next week I am going to go on less rest. I also do not swin back for fly very well so it is all free and *** for me.

I am also a middle aged beginner, of sorts - I never swam seriously until this fall. I was panicking at the lingo - it seems a list of numbers that immediately require dividing by 25. Math was never a very fun subject for me! '200 is how many up-and-backs of the pool?' - that sort of thing. But I'm getting there.
Good luck!
Joshua,
Thanks for posting your workout. Most workouts I find seem to be for someone much more skilled and advanced than I! I don't do fly, am slow, and almost every workout I look at includes an IM and/or is often near 5000 yards in an hour which I cannot do (by a lonngggg shot). So seeing your workout helps me a lot. Thanks
Nancy

I used these workouts to jumpstart back into swimming my first week. Definitely good for those who really need to start from the very beginning. :)
