There is a method, which is referred to as the Rushall method which Michael Andrew uses.
Was wondering if you had any critique about this. If this sort of training is a good idea and what are the problems.
Would this also be good for longer events? Like the 400 IM?
Thanks!

Alright since I'm sleepy and really want to get back into this kind of training I'm going to ask a few questions which will probably seem very simple to you guys
How should I go about scheduling this kind of training in? If I'm training 3 events, 50 free 100 free and 100 *** as in what's day of the weak?
So for 50 work I was gonna do 10 x 50s max effort holding Around 31-32 on 1:30. And them afterward I was gonna do USRPT training set for my 100. I wanna swim a 55 second hundred free but since it was my first workout I was thinking about going 30 x 25 trying to hold 15 seconds with 10 seconds of rest. So I'd be going on 25's. Every time if can't hit the interval I rest one set. If I have to rest 2 intervals in a row the set is done and if I have to do 4 misses total the set is done. Does that sound about right forth goal?
Where Does Andrews go from here? He is a 6'4'' 180 pound 14 year old? He swims anaerobic 25s and 50s at practice totaling 1500 yards. What does every top coach for the last 40 years talk about. You can go down in distance but not up. Spitz held the world record in the mile, did he ever swim the mile in the olympics? No. Remember that great american sprinter in the 80s Tom Jager, he also started out swimming distance.
I understand this kid also swims a very fast 400 IM. There are a lot of really good 400 IM short course yards swimmers that are under 16. Can they swim it successfully internationally and long course? Can they continue to improve in it as they age (Vendt, Phelps, Lochte, Clary)? You think those 4 guys were swimming practices of 1500 yards comprised of 25 sprints when they were 14?
Andrews- Is going to be remembered as the fastest 12-17 year old ever. Unless he grows to be 6'10'', this kid will level off and his peers will catch him. Especially those last 20 meters in a long course 100, LOL!. There are other energy systems after 30 seconds of effort... try tapping into them.
Research- Yes there is research that states prolonged intense anaerobic training is harmful to children- 12 and 13 year olds are children. Dont believe me... ask Jonty Skinner.
You want to train like this for a 1500.... do it. Let me know how it goes. Actually let Ous, Sun Yang, Connor, Park, Cochrane and Angel know. This way they can change their training and really go fast.
I think the whole point is that this challenges the kind of conventional wisdom that you've described. Would Usain Bolt have been better off starting off running 10ks and working down? No. He's a sprinter.
As for Michael Andrews - he'll hit his peak when his stroke is as efficient/effective as it can be, his starts and turns are as good as they can be, and he's as powerful as he can be. On that basis, I'd imagine that he has a long way to go yet, even if the gains over time are marginal...

As I understand it, Ous Mellouli DOES in fact use USRPT to train for the 1500!
Thanks, hopefully I can go faster in Montreal.
You're definitely going to Montreal? :canada: OUI!!!:ohyeah: Bruce and I will see you and SealGirl there!

Correct Sprint Diva- I misspoke. USRPT is mostly aerobic. Check out the you tube videos. They admit they are not swimming much more than 1500-2000 a workout. No I dont think he is going to swim the 1500 and like I said I dont think he will ever be able to finish off a long course 100 with the best of the world either. I think USRPT can be a great addition to a per iodized training program for 17+ aged swimmers. Younger athletes cant buffer the acids like adults. How many MALE NAG record holders at 12-14 years old in the 50 free have won an olympic medal or even made an olympic team? Somebody give me a number on this.

Not a direct answer to the above question, but
it appears that only 10 male 11-14 NAG record holders have become Olympians:

Yea Glenn that his is main training method. Really, where did you hear that pile of horse crap? Wait he did a couple of those sets with Salvo and now he uses it to train for the 1500? Yea all 10K gold medalists are now swimming 25s and 50s to train. Now that he swims for Bowman I am sure Bob has got him doing tons of USRPT. I mean that is what Phelps, Vendt, VanderKay, Schmidt and all the other Olympic medalists that Bob coaches use to be successful.
The source of this information regarding Ous Mellouli is John Naber. You might remember John Naber, he won four gold and a silver in the 1976 Olympics. I swim with John at Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
If you knew anything about USRPT you would know that to train for the 1500, you do repeat sets of 100's which is what Mellouli does according to John. John attended USC as did Mellouli.
USRPT is not mainstream. USRPT has many detractors. USRPT is not easy. But USRPT works. What do you do?
I'll be at the SCM meet in Carlsbad on June 29. I'm 65 years old and I would love to swim against you!

The wookie- i believe there is better research that states this type of training Is dangerous for childrens development. See jonty skinner lectures etc. So i am slightly angered when this discussion comes up. Sorry if i hurt your feelings. The training 20 years ago was pretty good. Evans, mary t, biondi, barrowman. They all held american and/or world records for 10, 15, 20 years.
I thought you said that research pertained to children doing anaerobic work. But when I said USRPT was mainly aerobic, you conceded that was so. So how precisely is aerobic work dangerous?!
