Hit 500k yds yesterday

On advice of a friend I started tracking my year to date yardage this year as a motivator to get the pool as often as possible, and to try to hit 1 million yards for the year. I've never done this in the 35 or so years I've been swimming but so far its been working pretty good; I'm 2 weeks ahead of schedule. anyone else keep track of their yardage through out the year?

anyone else keep track of their yardage through out the year? art_z, To join the Go the Distance listings, you first need to create a "MyUSMS" account and then begin recording your yardage in your FLOG (Fitness Log). Pages 6 and 7 of this document show how to set up your MyUSMS account: www.usms.org/.../usms_create_forums_acct.pdf When you set up your FLOG you may want to enter your year's total yards to date. You can just enter the total yardage all in one day, on the day you create the account. You don't have to go back day by day and enter it individually. You do have to be a USMS member to have a FLOG. • I started tracking my yardage in 2008. But the GTD challange has really motivated me to actually set a goal. GTD Progress 42.91% (I should be at 45.2%) 213.29 miles swum (375,383 yards/ 343,250meters) I've changed my goal twice. started at 800km and then dropped to 725km when i started thinking about the summer and 3 tappers, but it's back to 800km because I'm going to have more time to swim in the lake than I thought. if I had kept my 725km goal i would be roughly 9miles ahead of goal, but the 800km goal I am after today roughly 13miles behind. in two weeks I plan on swimming double more normal distance for one week and will get an extra 20 miles which should get me back on track. Hoping to reach my goal before Christmas so I can take a week off with the family ;)
  • I'm lucky my son has swimming lessons in the evening 5 days a week now for the next two weeks so I can do doubles every day (I usually swim mornings) which should add up nicely. (usually do 4k yards in the morning, 2.5k or so during his 45 min lesson). I know my 3 week trip to Florida is going to derail me a little bit but am trying to plan some workouts while I am down there. Either way I hope to be around 80k ahead of plan by that point. I will sign up for GTD probably for 2012. need to renew my USMS membership first, haven't done enough meets of late to make it worthwhile.

I'm at 236 as of yesterday. A little short of my goal of 560 for the year, but I'm on target to catch up in the next two weeks. But now that I realize how close 560 miles is to a million yards (567 miles), I want to hit that! It would take me a few more months to catch up... Even though I know GTD is just for fun, I take it too seriously. I get really frustrated when I have to taper. The high today is supposed to be 107. Probably a good day to sneak in a few extra yards--I definitely don't feel like doing much other than swimming when it gets this hot.
  • Great going! I'm at 369500 yds (~210 mi) Now we need to be mentally prepared to be humbled by the likes of Chris Stevenson and gdanner. I'm getting my butt kicked by a lot of people. 235 miles as of yesterday puts me in only 242nd place! Of our regular forumites, tjpatt might be the highest at 353 miles in 61st place. Might be missing someone since not everyone posts under their name. I think everyone higher than that is too busy swimming to post :).

I am going to hijack this thread. :hijack: Your comment indicates that you don't feel a membership in USMS is "worthwhile" unless you compete in meets. We hear this comment a lot and are trying to add value to our memberships for those who don't compete in meets. One of our current benefits is your own online fitness log (FLOG) and the ability to include your FLOG totals in the Go The Distance program. You indicated that you are tracking your yardage on your own. If you were tracking it through the Go The Distance program you would have already won a swim cap (50 miles), a $5.00 gift certificate (100 miles), and a mesh bag (250 miles). Other current member benefits include: Access to daily, written workouts created by four USMS coaches A subscription to SWIMMER magazine Subscriptions to two monthly e-newsletters (one for members, another for coaches) What other benefits could we offer that would make you consider rejoining USMS?
  • That's a good question. Obviously the cost isn't prohibitive, I think its more that masters swimming has pretty much vanished from my area. Its really just 2 friends and I (who both are USMS members curiously enough!) that get together and swim 5 to 7 times a week. Following this off topic theme: In April last year (2010) there was a nice meet at the Wyoming Valley CYC. It had a sensibly late start that did not require getting up at some ridiculously early hour, it had a nice selection of events, it was well run, it's a nice pool, there was good food and drink afterward, (and best of all, I was generally very pleased with my swims). I was really disapointed that it didn't appear on this year's schedule. Did you go to that meet? Do you know why it was not held again this year? Maybe you can encourage the right people to put on a meet there again.

If they included a addressed, stamped envelope in one of the end of the year swimmer mags, so I don't have to put my credit card info online, I'd be there instantly. As it is, I'll procrastinate until the July OW race in Pittsburgh.

If they included a addressed, stamped envelope in one of the end of the year swimmer mags, so I don't have to put my credit card info online, I'd be there instantly. We have spent a lot of time on a reliable online registration system and are trying to discourage the use of paper registration forms. You may not be aware that some of the major credit card companies offer a way for you to generate a one-use, temporary credit card number. The number is good only for one online purchase. Bank of America, for example, offers this feature to their cardholders. They call it "ShopSafe" and here is an explanation of how it works: www.bankofamerica.com/.../index.cfm "ShopSafeRegistered is a free credit card fraud protection service that allows you to create a temporary card number each time you make an online purchase. This number links directly to your real credit card account number but keeps your card number completely private and protected. The ShopSafe number is used just like any other credit card—a merchant never knows it's not your real credit card."
