Hit 500k yds yesterday

On advice of a friend I started tracking my year to date yardage this year as a motivator to get the pool as often as possible, and to try to hit 1 million yards for the year. I've never done this in the 35 or so years I've been swimming but so far its been working pretty good; I'm 2 weeks ahead of schedule. anyone else keep track of their yardage through out the year?
  • Definitely get on Go the Distance if you aren't already. Kind of a convenient way to track your workouts and you don't have to convert meters to yards to miles... or whatever. And you get cool stuff with Nike logos on it so you can pretend you are sponsored and impress all your friends. I'm at 263 miles which is a little under 500,000. My "goal" is 500 miles mainly because that is the distance where I get a free swimsuit... and the next freebie is at 1000 miles which isn't happening this year. Since I didn't start tracking until late January, I'm probably a good bit further along and should have no trouble with 500. 1,000,000 yards might be tougher. Could be a good goal to shoot for.

I have a very similar goal as you: a million meters. (What can I say, I succumbed to the alliteration.) I'm 11 miles ahead of pace so far, but I know from experience that you can lose ground in a hurry: illness, injury, work, vacation, taper, etc. One nice thing -- or a bad thing, depending on your perspective -- of GTD is that you can change your goal in mid-stream. If something unexpected sidelines you for a time and your original goal is no longer achievable, you can re-assess and try a new goal that is doable. The integration with the FLOG is great. And you can get monthly/weekly stats, and all that. The top people are pretty impressive: www.usms.org/.../gtdparticipants.php

I had it set for 365 miles and was on track but after the latest with my ankle and being told I was not to swim for 3+ weeks, I lowered it to 300. I hope to beat that by a lot, though.
  • The top people are pretty impressive I'm always amazed. Don Tatzin has swum 814.49 miles through 6/13. By my count that's 164 days this year, so he's averaged 4.97 miles per day (almost 8,750 yards). I wonder if he's shooting to average five miles per day?

Great going! I'm at 369500 yds (~210 mi) Now we need to be mentally prepared to be humbled by the likes of Chris Stevenson and gdanner.
  • That type of yardage sounds like a muffler commercial I have seen !!!!!!

Our pool actually has a mile club log on a message board and our aquatics director tallies each month to give you monthly and year to date totals. It was a great motivator while I was swimmng and I av. top 5 through out the years, but now that injury has sidelined me I rather not look at it or think about what could have been.My goal right now is to start from scratch next January, but I won't record it as I will not be able to swim the distances I used to.

  • My Go The Distance 2011 Progress 227.45 miles swum (=400,307 yards, =366,040 meters). This is my total after this morning. I would guess that during the next 2 1/2 months I might only swim about 20-30 miles tops, depending on my work scheduling...
