SCM --- yawn . . .

Is it just me or do world records in short course meters lack the prestige of world records in long course? And are the 50's just not as big a deal as the longer races? Maybe I'm just showing my age?
  • SCY is for turners,LCM is for SWIMMERS. You're so right, Allen! Reminds me of working out with kids in the mid-70's. There was one high school Breaststroker with whom I would work out long course, swimming the same intervals. But his 100 SCY was 7 seconds faster than mine! I think he won a Div II championship in the 100, but was nowhere in the 200. He once deliberately false-started so he would be DQ'd from a 200.

Seriously Mike... If you are yawning over internationally recognized world records, then what do you think the entire world is doing when the United States is swimming short course yards all spring? No one has a clue what "yards times" are except American swimmers. It really is a comedy... Even worse is that we can't even have a decent conversation about holding a short course meters national championships because we do not have enough SCM pools in the USA to accomodate one! I am incredibly excited and proud of my friends Ande Rasmussen, Richard Burns, Michael Mann, and Laura Val (to name a few) who all broke internationally recognized SCM World Records this weekend. And I happen to know that many masters swimmers around the world are taking notice of these American swimmer's accomplishments. SCY are way more fun and exciting than LCM...

I like LCM and SCM. Having never competed in either before masters, its a clean slate for me. I prefer to skip the SCY season altogether or just swim off events.

We waste too much time in the year swimming yards in the USA. I think that any new pool built should be built in at least SCM. New 25 yard only construction should be outlawed. . . ." When I was a kid, high school sprinters all aimed for Jesse Owens long standing 100 yard dash record (I think it was 9.4 sec.), but now they run 100 meters. Of course it's much easier to change the finish line for a track meet than the length of a pool but it does go to the point that we can adapt to a new record book.
  • Have not swum a SCM meet yet this season. And have only trained SC yards since Indy. Swear... I can not feel the difference between SCY and SCM when I'm racing! I couldn't agree more. An extra stroke or so, but they're not fundamentally different courses like SCM/SCY vs. LCM. However, I kind of like the 3 season approach to masters that seems to be evolving of SCM fall, SCY spring and LCM summer ... especially since I keep mostly skipping that summer season that requires you to get in truly good shape and not just rely upon those nice walls and long pushoffs.

When I was a kid we had meets in 20 yard pools. They actually kept records and top five lists for that sort of thing. And we didn't let the extra turns keep us from being slow.

My first club team was the Burbank YMCA and it was a 20 yard pool. Maybe that is why I am a "turner not a swimmer". You want to hear old: My high school pool: Burbank High, had a 100' pool. 33 1/3 yards. Maybe that is why i don't like long course. In the spring a lot of kids swam in the YMCA League. Dual meets every week with a championship meet at the end. I swam at Burbank Y many times. Most of the Y pools were 20yards. But the downtown 28th Street Y was 15 yards! I swam for the Norwalk-La Mirada YMCA --- which didn't exist other than having a swim team.

Mike - HOW OLD ARE YOU??? Ha Ha - my age group team also had some groups training in the dive pool which was 20 yards. I only liked it because it was warm water in the winter and I was skinny.
