SCM --- yawn . . .

Is it just me or do world records in short course meters lack the prestige of world records in long course? And are the 50's just not as big a deal as the longer races? Maybe I'm just showing my age?
  • YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!!!!! With proper training and the desire, plus a few really good, ideal race conditions, you never know what you (or any forum readers, for that matter) may achieve!!!!

My original thought re this thread was open competition. But re Masters records --- this forum has been most enlightening in illuminating the depth of knowledge, dedication, and accomplishment of peoples abilities to do things that would have been labeled "impossible" a decade or two ago. Swimming is great sport because it gives an objective measure of performance and any records set in masters swimming I truly feel reestablish the perceived boundaries of human potential, which benefits all.
  • Seriously Mike... If you are yawning over internationally recognized world records, then what do you think the entire world is doing when the United States is swimming short course yards all spring? No one has a clue what "yards times" are except American swimmers. It really is a comedy... Even worse is that we can't even have a decent conversation about holding a short course meters national championships because we do not have enough SCM pools in the USA to accomodate one! I am incredibly excited and proud of my friends Ande Rasmussen, Richard Burns, Michael Mann, and Laura Val (to name a few) who all broke internationally recognized SCM World Records this weekend. And I happen to know that many masters swimmers around the world are taking notice of these American swimmer's accomplishments.
  • We waste too much time in the year swimming yards in the USA. I think that any new pool built should be built in at least SCM. New 25 yard only construction should be outlawed. I do USA Swimming meets and they do no SCM meets that I could find. Well, the upside is that they have long course meets in the winter. Now, if only I could get the QTs to swim at one of these meets, I would be psyched. At least, USMS focuses on SCM in the fall. Of course, the majority of the US Masters competitors only do yards which is so tragic. SCM is fun and of course, nothing compares to LCM swimming. Getting off topic here, a Masters World Record is nothing to yawn about. It says about our abilities even though most US Masters swimmers have to train in awful Yards pool, yuck!
  • Do you hold or have you held any? If so, maybe a yawn for you. It depends! Believe what you want! It is my opinion is that any swim that was or is a world record in any event individul or relay, any age group, is prestigous. You have to find your own meaning in the records. It is quite something to set a goal and go out and actually DO IT!!!! That goes for USMS SCY National records, too.
  • My apologies in advance for the possible mis-interpretation of the above post. NOT poking at Maui Mike, just a play on the yawn.

U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums Your point is well taken. If I ever held a scm world record it's status would be stratospheric!!!! But that won't be happening because my suit is too slow.:bolt:
  • I like LCM and SCM. Having never competed in either before masters, its a clean slate for me. I prefer to skip the SCY season altogether or just swim off events. Need to walk the talk... Long Beach.
  • We waste too much time in the year swimming yards in the USA. I think that any new pool built should be built in at least SCM. New 25 yard only construction should be outlawed. . . ." When I was a kid, high school sprinters all aimed for Jesse Owens long standing 100 yard dash record (I think it was 9.4 sec.), but now they run 100 meters. Of course it's much easier to change the finish line for a track meet than the length of a pool but it does go to the point that we can adapt to a new record book. I think we were always on a similar page Mike... :)
  • It is a shame that we can't have yard pool burnings or something. Physically, it can't be done due to the environment damage. Maybe some figurative burnings or something.
