Rest and Recovery

Having given up competitive swimming in college for surfing (more bikinis), a landlocked job has me back in the pool with alot of unanswered questions. I'm 46 years old now, and doing about 2,000 meters a day. My biggest question is whether to rest a day when sore from swimming, or to just press on. I'll swim hard for a day or two or three and become pretty sore. Should I keep swimming, or take a day off for recovery?
  • On the off chance that this isn't George or someone doing another catchy alias (this time of wookiee), here is the thread that addresses some of the concerns of women who are 46 years old and still wear bikinis. forums.usms.org/showthread.php Take a day off. Don't swim too many consecutive days in a row.
  • My team typically does pretty hard sets on Mon, Wed, and Fri, with Tues/Thurs usually more laid back recovery/drills. That isn't to say we don't do any distance, sometimes on Tues we'll have very long, easy swims (I remember some days of 3500+ in an hour).
  • Mookie, Need for recovery varies by swimmer, as I believe is being discussed elsewhere on this forum. Some people need recovery a lot; others can just keep trucking along through a succession of tough workouts. If you tend to get injured easily, you probably need to rest/recover a bit more, especially as you get back into the water. At the same time, though, no pain, no gain - you can't keep backing away when the going gets tough, or you'll never get anywhere. Find a happy medium, then set a workout schedule/plan and stick to it! Welcome back to the water, and welcome to the forums! :fish2:

  • Thank you for the info and advice, everyone! The help, support, and forum are awesome. I'm a guy, and viewing Bikinis and surfing stole my libidinous soul for thirty years. I know it was a dumb question, but I really wasn't sure if it would help or hurt to do a hard (for me) workout if I was sore from some preceding hard workouts. Sounds like I should ease up for a day for recovery. Thanks again, Bill aka Mookie

  • Absolutely go every other day to begin after some time off from training. The most important thing is getting your stroke in order, so work on drills and swim intentionally slow and technically correct. Ask the coach and friends to look at your stroke everyday for a while to make sure you are not reinforcing bad habits. The only thing that should be making you tired is adapting to the yardage... not swimming fast or sprinting. As you adapt after a few weeks, add one more workout a week and train a little harder until you are at your desired level.
