Having given up competitive swimming in college for surfing (more bikinis), a landlocked job has me back in the pool with alot of unanswered questions. I'm 46 years old now, and doing about 2,000 meters a day. My biggest question is whether to rest a day when sore from swimming, or to just press on. I'll swim hard for a day or two or three and become pretty sore. Should I keep swimming, or take a day off for recovery?
Absolutely go every other day to begin after some time off from training. The most important thing is getting your stroke in order, so work on drills and swim intentionally slow and technically correct. Ask the coach and friends to look at your stroke everyday for a while to make sure you are not reinforcing bad habits. The only thing that should be making you tired is adapting to the yardage... not swimming fast or sprinting.
As you adapt after a few weeks, add one more workout a week and train a little harder until you are at your desired level.
