Well I have been reading through all of these posts and they are extremely informative on the swimming aspect, but was wondering if anyone has any recommendations/recipes for some great swimming food? Was thinking a nice chicken stir fry over rice. Not going on a diet and don't think I am dedicated enough to do the 6 small meals per day thing, just a regular 3 meals a day *** that pretty much cut out fast foods since I began 3 weeks ago.
Also, is it more important to have a meal before or after a workout? I always seem to be hungry coming out of the pool after a workout regardless of eating an hour before. Thanks in advance

I started back swimming in September. IT is going well but now I need to concentrate on my eating. Due to my thyroid problems to lose weight I must cut out the bread and sugar. So I am starting that Monday. Heading out to the Mandarin all you can eat buffet tomorrow night for my dds 14th birthday lol.
I will incorporate lots of fresh fruits, lean meats and veg

After morning swim, I have a protein meal replacement, 12oz V-8, and a diet Dr Pepper. At 9:30 its a hard boiled egg. Lunch is a small meal usually left-overs (my favorite) or a salad with tuna or salmon on it, around 3pm is a hand full of almonds or other small snack. Home for a small dinner and 2 glasses of :wine: (doctors orders). No dessert. I might have a late night snack of fruit or yogurt.

Ah - the Mandarin buffet. The one in Burlington Ontario has 200 items. When we go to Hamilton we go there. I try not to eat anything for 24 hours before I go. www.mandarinbuffet.com/locations_burlington.html

What I do - three small meals a day and four snacks a day. My snacks sometimes could be a small meal.
Fast foods are not bad it is how big is the fast food meal.
When I go to Point Roberts just accross the border, as an after breakfast snack I get about a dollars worth the Jo Jos. I don't share these with my wife.
If I go to Wendy's a baked potato.
Macdonalds a small hamburger. We do not have to order the meal deal or get Large of anything.
Yeah, trying to retrain myself to watch the caloric intake, so the servings are definitely being reduced. As for the fast food, usually will get a salad, baked potato, or a small chicken sandwich with no mayo now where I would have gotten one of those big big meals not 2 months ago.

Who can argue with doctors orders? :laugh2:

Best of luck to you cath, gonna be a challenge here cutting those breads as well coming from a classic old school Italian family, probably have a gun to my head on our next family dinner with my grandma screaming "MANJA!" :D
Appreciate all the advice from ya'll.
Before practice I have a banana. Makes you feel fuller longer. Afterwards I usually have a cheese stick. I need the salt as well as the protien.
As for meals, for those who cook, I highly recommend the "5 Ingredient, 15 Minute" cookbook by Cooking Light. All recipes are light, 5 basic ingredients and take around 15 min (give or take). They are all wonderful. We have a family of 3 with one being 2.5 years old and not eating much and the meals always give me leftovers, which is a plus, too.

I will have to buy some more whey protein. I have used it in the past. I am sure that is what I need as sometimes I am pretty worn out and by the time I get to the van I am in need for some energy as I have a 35 min drive to work.
I am excited about incorporating better food options. It is time. No point in swimming hard and not eating right. They go hand in hand.

I have a bunch of nutritional questions...way too many to put in any one thread. Does anybody know of a good internet forum that focuses on nutrition? I've looked and found cooking forums, diet forums, and excercise forums, but haven't found one yet specifically all about nutrition.
I have a pdf file that is too large to post hre but is all about nutrition for swimmers. I haven't had a chance to read all of this yet but it looks good. Came to me via the kids team I practice with. If anyone wants it, please PM me with your email address.

Some would recommend beer:
". . . two Italian sport doctors Antonelli and Romano . . . came to the conclusion that a liter of beer a day increases performance, concentration and reaction and strengthens muscles. The American cardiologist Sheehan maintains that after long distance running, jogging, cross country skiing or marathons, beer ideally replaces bodily fluids and energy. The French doctor Gulpin discovered decades ago that beer increases lung capacity and speeds the lung's ability to process oxygen." (www.spatenusa.com/.../index.htm)
You can research these conclusions yourself by visiting Oregon next summer for LC Nationals, and sampling some of Oregon's famous microbrews. Find out more: forums.usms.org/showthread.php
