Feeling Slow

I did my practice yesterday - I felt sooo slow. My times were slower and just felt like I was dragging. I pretty sure the pool I practice is slow any way. I could feel that I was fine in the deep but as soon as you cross the line for the shallow end, man... it was a struggle. Sometime, I feel fine though, my 100's practice time range in the 1:15 - 1:20, but yesterday it's was 1:20 -1:25. What the problem, is it me or what??? Does anyone else get this way??
  • What the problem, is it me or what??? Does anyone else get this way?? Maybe you just need a day off? Some days you may have just a day day at practice, but it's usually no reflection on what shape you're in. Hope the next one is better :)
  • Some days you have it, some days you don't. You just hope you definitely have it on the days you absolutely need it - i.e., the day of competition.
  • We had that awful rain too. What gives? YUK! Doesn't the weather know that this is SUNNY California? :thhbbb: Unfortunately, I had a dead battery in that deluge and had to wait for AAA for an hour at my son's school- tooey. That, plus a sinus infection, kept me out of the pool on Monday. Tuesday, I still didn't fell well. It really just makes me WANT to get back in the pool more on Wednesday. (Come on drugs, kick in!) I've only got out of the pool due to injury (back or shoulder- see new thread I'm going to start), but I have had really bad workouts and wanted to get out. I just stick it out and think, "If I were in the middle of a race would I get out?" Probably not. Remember the worst day swimming is still better than not swimming at all!

Oh, gotta say I really enjoyed the shower. I'm going tomorrow to work out at the High School. The coach ( my old HS swim coach) lets the masters come in and swim with his aquatics class/team. Maybe I'll have a better swim. I went last week for the first time it was interesting, trying to keep pace with his good swimmers who are maybe 11yrs.old. LOL, I did it though... those young whipper snappers. He wants to start a masters practice in Sept. for those wanting to go to Nationals. People are wanting to go with it being in Austin in '08 it's close to home - only 4 hours away and in West Texas that's just around up the road. But for now I"m try to get readay for April's USA meet here in town.

Had a ho-hum swim the other night...things just didn't click. I decided to blame it on the rain. Seriously, it was pouring rain on us and the wind was blowing like nobodies business. In all seriousness, I know that not every practice is going to be better than the last. I find it best to keep my eye on a bigger prize or a bigger goal. While this practice might suck I know that in the grand scheme of things I am making progress and that is what really matters.

If I am having a bad practice I usually try to do stuff that works or usually goes right and finish on that note...I tend to get out of the pool sooner if it's bad...sometimes it just isn't helping to get more frustrated.

Sounds like it was an off day. Those happen all the time to the best of us. Just keep swimming. If you have a lot of off days in a row you could be hitting a wall. Walls suck! The only thing to do for a wall is just keep swimming and hope it doesn't last too long. Sometimes tapering can help bump you over. Good Luck!!

You are not alone in having an occasional slow practice. I had one last night too. Sometimes the water just doesn't feel "right." In my case, the walls kept moving. Flip turns were either too long, or too short. Awful night. I chalk it up to being tired from a harder than normal workout the previous night. My body was telling me something, so after struggling through 90% of the workout, I got out and called it a night. Don't get too down about an off period. It could last a day or it could last longer, but you WILL get past it. When I get this way, I try to work technique instead of speed, or try to change up the usual routine by working on strokes I like to ignore. If we didn't have bad workouts, how would we know when we have great ones? Try to find at least one good thing about a bad workout. Did you swim more *** stroke than normal? Hit a good streamline off each wall? Really enjoy the shower after the swim?? Hang in there... Dana

A bad workout day here and there is par for the course, but when you have several in a row, it's time to rest the body. If this happens to me 3 days in a row, I take 2 days off and BAM, I am back and even better. We have to all figure out when we are excessively fatigued or just going through a bad round of workouts.
