To the practioners of the most noble stroke...Hip pain?
Former Member
I'm a breaststroker...for anyone who confused "noble stroke" with some other lesser stroke....;) Usually the one part of my body that hurts is my shoulders and occasionaly knees, but my hip has been killing me lately.
I have double jointed hips and they occasionally slip out of place, but I can usually pop them back in easily and it only takes about day. My hip has been hurting for about a week now and it's different pain then slipped out of place.
Any ideas what could be causing it or how to fix it?
Merci Beaucoup!
The nobelest stroke would be fly of course, during which I do not experience hip pain. I would suggest however, for loosey goosey hips that you strengthen everything around it to make it more stable. Do you have exercises?
Where is the pain and what type of pain is it?
Kyra, what the heck is going on in your avatar? I can't figure it out.
Anyway ... I would suggest, and I very well could be wrong because hips aren't my area, that you gently stretch and do some light weights or resistance bands that would strengthen the area. For example the sitting machine where you push your legs in and the one where you push out. Maybe light side, forward, and back kicks with a band around your ankles first. Don't do anything that hurts.
Really, you might want to see an orthopod, I'll let you know when I find one to marry.
No I don't have exercises. I've never had a problem with it really. Just every once in a while gets bad.
The pain is in the front of my right hip in the joint. Like I have a bubble that won't pop. Which usually means it's out of joint, but it doesn't feel like it's out of place and it hasn't popped back in after all my tricks I know to put it back.
Fly may not make your hips hurt, but it makes everything else hurt.

While my hip issues are not from swimming, this was what my PT had me do for my hip pain . . . along with lots of core strengthening. It's boring, :snore: but it seems to be working (at least for the non-arthritis related pain), because I just got cleared to do some non-pool stuff - yay! :applaud:

Kyra pay no attention to the loud attention seeking female poster....
Is it on the outside on on the inside Kyra? If I mis-kick I can kind of pull my hip a bit too.
Do you stretch with splits? Leg's folded and feet "palms" together?
After doing mucho froggo. I hang on the wall and hold my legs at 90 degrees to my torso and open my legs wide and then close them I repeat this smoothly for a little while just to warm hips down a bit. Then bicycle them a bit while in the same spot. Can't hurt.
Kyra, I agree, the most noble stroke of all! I'm so glad you put out a question about hip pain w/breastroke. I've been too embarassed to throw that one out in addition to all my other aches & pains. Anyway, I have the opposite problem, very very tight (& old w/arthritis) hips. I have had excruciating pains in the butt -- periformis muscle to be exact. The pain would run from deep in my butt to my hip and all the way down my IT band, across my knee and down along my calf. Sounds crazy but it was horrible pain. Did 8 weeks of physical therapy. Besides the tightness I had a lot of muscle inbalances. Between strengthening & stretching I have become almost pain free and I'm swimming a lot more fast fast breastroke than I have before. What you describe may be due to muscle imbalances as much as anything else. I would suggest a visit to the Doc. & a short round of physical therapy to learn which exercises you need. I did a lot of lunges, squats, side squat stepping w/stretch a band at the ankles and then a lot of foam rolling, my butt out to my hip, IT band & even my inner thigh. Sounds crazy but it has helped totally. Still can't run but I'm swimming as much breastroke (and a lot of fast 90 - 100%) as I can manage. Anyway, there is no advice better than professional and with something as scarry as hips popping out of joint I'd really suggest a visit to an expert. Keep us posted as to how it goes.
Thanks everybody. The pain on the outside, and it's probably from stretching now that I think about it. I was messing around seeing how far I could go into the splits to see if the yoga was working, so that's probably it. I'll keep stretching it gently and so maybe some light weights and see what comes of it.
Heather, that's me passed out in a plane. I'm sleeping on the tray table.
Hi Kyra,
Everyone else has good advice, but I just thought I'd say that I have had a similar pain before (I'm a breaststroker, too). I think for me it happens if my hip flexors are tight, and I don't warm up slowly enough. I think you should be careful about weights and stretching while you are still feeling pain. I'd go with babying your hip until the pain subsides and then adding in gentle stretching and strengthening. Also, I would suggest making sure you warm up slowly. I swim in the early morning, so I always try to make sure I've done at least 300-400 yards, including some free, fly, or back kicking, before warming up *** kick, which I first do with almost no pressure or power for a 100 or so. Maybe that's overly cautious, but I hope something like that helps you. Feel better!

Kyra-
What you described sounds to me like a strained hip flexor (flexer??). I get a similar sensation from doing to many lunges--thus, a great reason for me not to do them. (I don't care if every trainer in the world says they are the perfect move to tone the "lower half" :thhbbb: )
Anyway, when it happens to me the only cure is rest. Swimming freestyle, back & fly do not aggrevate the problem, so stick with them for a while.
Breaststroke, like lunges, should only be done in moderation. Recently acquired Speedo breastroke fins to try sparking interest in this stroke, but the "new toy" factor is wearing off and I still do not feel the love...

I thought backstroke was the noblest stroke:rofl:. I have no answers for you but I just wanted you to know that you are not alone in hip pain, but mine is an aged body trying to do the impossible, so mine is my own fault.
