To the practioners of the most noble stroke...Hip pain?
Former Member
I'm a breaststroker...for anyone who confused "noble stroke" with some other lesser stroke....;) Usually the one part of my body that hurts is my shoulders and occasionaly knees, but my hip has been killing me lately.
I have double jointed hips and they occasionally slip out of place, but I can usually pop them back in easily and it only takes about day. My hip has been hurting for about a week now and it's different pain then slipped out of place.
Any ideas what could be causing it or how to fix it?
Merci Beaucoup!

Your femur actually slips out of place? That makes me cringe! I would be in the Ortho's office ASAP if I had something like that going on. The new type of pain could be indicative of something out of the "ordinary". Once again, I would waste no time getting that checked out.
My biggest issue with *** is straining the inner thigh muscles (adductors?) if I don't warm up sufficiently. I now make it a point to save the *** for last. Isn't there a song about that? Hmm? Anyhow good luck with your hip issue. As somebody else stated earlier...don't do anything that hurts. If swimming *** hurts, then stop. Swim free or free pull until this issue gets resolved.

It does occasionally. I used to be able to pop it around, but I can't so much anymore.
I would go to the dr. but the pain is sub-siding and like I said, it's happened before. More than likely it was I just over used my hip flexor, whether it was actually on breaststroke or not I'm beginning to question....I guess I'll stop testing my yoga limits for awhile. ;)
Thanks everybody for the tips and help!!! I'll keep on eye on it, and definately see the doc if it gets worse or happens again.
Kyra:
I just had knee surgery. The first thing my Ortho did was to check the flexibility in my hip and knee. I am normal to slightly stiff which he said was good. He said that "double Jointed" people are at great risk for joint damage. According to him, there's no such thing as "double jointed" just some people lack a secure support structure in the joint itself; so when the muscles fatigue, they start to wear and tear. The joints are durable but eventually they wear out.
I'd get checked by a Doc/MRI. Hip damage at your age will do a lot worse than just end your career ion the "Noblest Stroke".
Take care,
Is this silly thread for misplaced gymnasts and divers still going......the reason your all whining about hips and knees is because you walk around like ducks....
Ha.....right back at you Fort & Rich.....think I don't read your posts?!
Paul:
I gotcha right back on your favorite SPL thread. Think I don't read Terry's posts?
My hips and knees are just "ducky." :thhbbb: It's all that free/fly crap that hurts.
Paul- just because you're tall enough that your knees have a different zip code from your head doesn't mean the rest of us can't do the most noble stroke. You'd better not start doing it, 'cause I'd like to have the illusion that I might be able to beat you in one stroke...

Seagurl,
I read several good responses and would like to add my two cents worth...
There is actually a hip problem referred to as "hip impingement" and it is exacerbated by flexion with internal rotation of the hip (this is what the hips do during the breaststroke kick). It leads to deterioration of the hip joint and can sometimes be corrected through exercise - in extreme cases, surgery may be the answer.
Abdominal strengthening (core strengthening, as someone already mentioned) and gluteus max strengthening as well as stretching of your hip flexors would help.
Just some food for thought....
I really appreciate all these tips!
I talked to Dr. Mom yesterday (she's a PA) and told me to do pretty much the same stuff you guys have mentioned, so I'm easing up on my breaststroke for now, ice (or brocolli ;)), and Ibuprofen. I'm gonna do that for a few days and then start some gentle strecthing too. If it still hurts by spring break, I'll probably go to the doc when I'm home and get it checked out.
Thanks again for all the help!!
"The Noble Stroke"? I've never seen so many misguided, delusional people in my life!
The 4th stroke does nothing but hinder the beauty of the IM's.....some PC coach came up with the idea of inserting this travesty of a swim stroke into what was a thing of beauty (fly, back & free).....guess he had some gymnasts take a wrong turn and end up at the pool one day and anted to be "inclusive"! :laugh2:
That was not me....I have documentation that can prove I was out of the country on both dates....
Only one man could pull this off.....the Evil-Goodsmith.....only problem is someone would have noticed....he's far less handsome then me and as skinny as my forearm.....
