To the practioners of the most noble stroke...Hip pain?
Former Member
I'm a breaststroker...for anyone who confused "noble stroke" with some other lesser stroke....;) Usually the one part of my body that hurts is my shoulders and occasionaly knees, but my hip has been killing me lately.
I have double jointed hips and they occasionally slip out of place, but I can usually pop them back in easily and it only takes about day. My hip has been hurting for about a week now and it's different pain then slipped out of place.
Any ideas what could be causing it or how to fix it?
Merci Beaucoup!

Kyra, I agree, the most noble stroke of all! I'm so glad you put out a question about hip pain w/breastroke. I've been too embarassed to throw that one out in addition to all my other aches & pains. Anyway, I have the opposite problem, very very tight (& old w/arthritis) hips. I have had excruciating pains in the butt -- periformis muscle to be exact. The pain would run from deep in my butt to my hip and all the way down my IT band, across my knee and down along my calf. Sounds crazy but it was horrible pain. Did 8 weeks of physical therapy. Besides the tightness I had a lot of muscle inbalances. Between strengthening & stretching I have become almost pain free and I'm swimming a lot more fast fast breastroke than I have before. What you describe may be due to muscle imbalances as much as anything else. I would suggest a visit to the Doc. & a short round of physical therapy to learn which exercises you need. I did a lot of lunges, squats, side squat stepping w/stretch a band at the ankles and then a lot of foam rolling, my butt out to my hip, IT band & even my inner thigh. Sounds crazy but it has helped totally. Still can't run but I'm swimming as much breastroke (and a lot of fast 90 - 100%) as I can manage. Anyway, there is no advice better than professional and with something as scarry as hips popping out of joint I'd really suggest a visit to an expert. Keep us posted as to how it goes.
