Hey all
I just started swimming again for exercise gone from 1/4 mile to 1 mile in about 3 weeks (2 swims a week) muscles needed to adapt first.
I'm hitting around the 40-50 (need to time for accuracy) minute mark to swim the mile breastroke. What should be a goal time to aim for I'm 37, 190ish, 5'8".
Obviously I'm not going to go out and try to make a goal time at next swim but I can try to increase speed in incremements.
Not trying to make event times just set a goal for a nice solid workout tempo for now.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Rich
It takes me about a month to get the courage to do a 800-yard breaststroke set after a long break. And I've been swimming fairly continuously all my life.
Because you're getting back in the pool, I wouldn't try to time yourself yet. Breaststroke takes more time to find rhythm, pacing and technique than any other stroke. Work on getting used to swimming again. Then, maybe in another two months, do that mile *** again.
As I said in the other breaststroke thread, make sure you have a good song catalog in your head.

A mile of breaststroke in that time sounds like a pretty good workout, especially after only three weeks.

Thanks, that is very encouraging to hear, honestly I mean it. I swam a lot as a kid but haven't for true sport/competition for 20 years...I guess I can still improve my workout or try to build my freestyle endurance for variety.
I feel pleased with how I've done, so I guess it's the muscle memory helping me out a bit...It's funny I still see my old swim coach in my mind as I make my laps lol.
I guess she'd be pleased to know her efforts still remain with me.
The main thing is the swimming it feels good mentally and physically.
Thanks for input.

Thanks Jeff. Good advice. Thankfully, I've had no probs gettting used to swimming again, I've done 1 mile for 3 consecutive workouts. It's because I wasn't struggling that I though perhaps I am not pushing myself fast enough...I've been working on stroke like you say though... trying to get different tweaks on my stroke...I guess I'l keep at it... perhaps speeding for a period then slowing again. My main goal is strength, fitness and fat loss...
... and yeah, I wish I could take my IPOD in the pool :D
A mile of butterfly? Who would ever think of a cruel thing to do, I would rather it be breaststroke. :-) Seriously though, a mile of butterfly, wouldn't that be hard on every inch of you? I wouldn't know since I can't swim that stroke. Actually I can but try to avoid it at all costs.

Hahaha
I am really amazed at the range of people on this site; I was reading about 80 year old swimmers...that's awesome.
As for knees I don't feel it too bad...I have good legs (thankfully), but my 3 herniated lumbar discs are the real issue. Hence why I am off of the football (soccer) pitch and into the water again.
I always was a breastroke swimmer and maybe I'm just pre-programmed for it. I am keeping that internal ear opend for knee issues. If I get pains I'll do crawl and use a float for longer workouts--I only have one speed for frontcrawl and I burn out way too fast LOL...

I am surprised that none of the breaststrokers have tried feats like Vicki Keith

This swimmer did more than a mile of breaststroke first man to swim the English Channel A news release from 1883 - Captain Matthew Webb, The celebrated swimmer. Drowned on Tuesday last in his attempt to swim the whirlpool rapids below Niagara Falls
Troy also did the breaststroke on his swim to Bathsheba.
