Help My Flutter Kick is Horrible!

I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds. I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.
  • Hey Shane, when you get to where you can flutter kick 25's under 20, which you can, start working on 50's. Also work on your SDK. what events are you training for? Ande hey Ande, i am getting bored with my weekly kick set and have reached a plateau as well. could use a change of pace and some accountability wouldn't hurt either. basically i do 4 x 100yd flutter streamlined afap with 2 - 4 min rest alternating free/back. then 2 x 100 with fins. times range from 1:30-1:35 w/o fins and :58 - 1:05 with fins. today i tried one of the sets you suggested, 25 flutter sprint followed by 75 active recovery swim. did this 8 times from a push using pace clock: 18, 18, 17, 18, 18, 17, 18, 17 finished up with 25 free swim + 75 recovery. time was 12-13 ish one thing i noticed already is that my kick was not deep enough. the 17's were using a deeper kick with slightly slower tempo. it actually felt slower but the clock doesn't lie. wish i had a better way to time myself. i will try to find something. anyway thanks for all the good advice you give on this thread.

Ande, all these times are for 100% effort. no pacing at all. i could probably do a better time pacing the 100 and maybe the 75. should i do this when testing or just continue to blast?
  • hey shane, great! you have a starting point. now train to improve those times and test once a week, let's see how much you can improve Anybody else want to kick faster faster? ande 12/09/09 scy, push, pace clock 25 :18 50 :40 75 1:04 100 1:33
  • Shane, have you tried seeing what your 100 pace time is compared to WOT (wide open throttle)? I guess do whatever it takes for lower 100 time (i.e., pacing, face in water, etc) 12/12/09 :22 (21:96) 12/05/09 :23 12/01/09 :25 Though I kicked my foot off my leg today.
  • your goal is to kick the fastest possible time in each distance proper pacing will help you kick a faster 50, 75 & 100 if you kick a 100 all out your 2nd 50 will drop off a lot. pacing can help you keep your 1st & 2nd 50's closer Ande, all these times are for 100% effort. no pacing at all. i could probably do a better time pacing the 100 and maybe the 75. should i do this when testing or just continue to blast?
  • Did an all out 100 flutter kick for time this morning Tue Dec 15th, 2009 100 scy flutter kick with board dive start with board wore: briefs Todd & Tyler timed with the pace clock went 1:07 Ande - Interested in why you went with the board (especially from a dive - my Lord, did you separate a shoulder?), and if you feel boards are the right choice with the free/fly/*** kicks. I agree they are good for general kick development, but don't they put your head/shoulders out of swimming position when you are ging for time? Matt
  • I want to improve my 50, 100, & 200 free. So one of my projects this season is to work on my flutter kicking speed & speed endurance. I'll be doing lots of fast flutter kicking with REST, 15's, 25's 50's 75's & 100's plus an occasional 150 & 200 Did an all out 100 flutter kick for time this morning Tue Dec 15th, 2009 100 scy flutter kick with board dive start with board wore: briefs Todd & Tyler timed with the pace clock went 1:07
  • 25 SCM kick with board Timed with watch, rounded up except on 12/12/09 Wore Finis amphibian pants 0:34 11/18/09 0:27 11/23/09 0:25 12/1/09 0:24 12/3/09 0:23 12/5/09 0:21.96 12/12/09 25 SCY kick with board Timed by the digital pool timer (00:00) 0:19 12/16/09 Hit the wall on 00:18 but it was on 18 for a while prior (maybe 3/4 second) so I'll call it 0:19. Kicked easy back to start and then went 0:20. Did a couple 50 free set's, rested a minute then went 0:19 just like the first. With a stopwatch would it be OK if I just hold it in a hand on the board or do I need to find an assistant? When should I press start, before I make my first move or as my feet push off? How are you supposed to hold the board? I just place my hands palmed down in the center of it.
  • Hey Redbird, I went with a board to train & test it the same way each time I did a belly flop dive where the board skims along the surface boards are a good choice for free, fly & *** kicking sometimes it's important to kick fly & *** without boards I want to see how much I can improve my 25, 50, 75, & 100 flutter kicking times this season. I want to have a power flutter kick for 50 & 100 free. I felt like my kick fell off in my 100 free at SPMA. Hi Shane, good job, show your times like this (below) & including prior dates & times Start using a stop watch, get timed to 10th's of a sec how much rest are you taking between efforts? which order are you testing your kicks in, consider changing the order kicking times 25 / 50 / 75 / 100 scy 12/16/09 :18, :40, 1:03, 1:30, push, pace clock 12/09/09 :18, :40, 1:04, 1:33, push, pace clock I did not get splits on my 1:07 kick Probably out in 30 or 31 here's how I turn with a board? about 6 - 8 feet from the wall I take a free stroke with my right arm then I take a stroke with my left arm that's holding the board, kind of sweeps to the side, my right hand is forward & grabs the wall, my left arm & the board are pointing towards the other end, I bring my knees / legs up and around then put my feet on the wall let go with my right hand & push off hard I move my right hand back to the board (out of the water) during the push off & glide then power up my kick I have pretty fast turns with a board. My best ever flutter kicks with a board from a push are (college times) 50 28.0 100 1:02? 200 2:16?
