who is doing the one hour postal swim this year?
Maybe me
Goals: finish
try to be around what I did last year
strategies?
Prep: train pretty hard next couple weeks
rest a few days before
maybe shave
day of the swim:
wear a speedy suit
warm up 10 min, rest 5 min
start off easy and smooth
swim in a lane where I can see the clock
treat goggs so they won't fog
stay steady
have counter put a kick board in every 500 or 1000
attempt to descend in some way, by 1000's or 12 min blocks,
sprint the last min
or
Maybe I won't even do it, it's long, it's painful & I'm a sprinter
I'm planning on a one hour IM. 15 minutes per stroke. 4000 seems like a reasonable goal to shoot for.
Wednesday main set (4320 IM)
One Hour Postal swim done as one hour IM - 15 minutes per stroke
Butterfly - 1050
Backstroke - 1100
Breastroke - 950
Freestyle - 1220
In butterfly, I did DPS fly except I mixed in regular 25 flys at the following points: 75, 175, 275, 475, 575, 675, 775, 875, 975, 1025.
Managing to do 1100 backstroke in 15 minutes when the first 200 was basically recovery swimming makes me think that last year's 4250 backstroke in one hour wasn't really a very good swim for me.
I had set 4000 as my goal because I figured I would do well under 1000 breastroke and would need the other strokes to pull me up to 4000. So totaling 950 there was nice.
80 warmdown and out
The other swimmers in the pool had been making guesses about WTF I was doing. The closest guess was 1600 IM.

Boy, were they wrong! Way to go, TG... (I never even hit 4000 yards in a postal swim where it was all free. I can't imagine doing it IM.)

Thanks smontanaro! If I had to swim one hour of freestyle I probably wouldn't enjoy it, or do it at all. Come up with your own weird idea that appeals to you and do that. That's my advice. :chug: (And if any money changes hands between the spectators after you explain what you just did, then even better :bolt:)

Solid work! Next year, I suggest you do every 4th lap SDK's (no breath of course).
2010: 3605 yds
2011: 3675 yds
2012: 3690 yds
2013: 3720 yds
I am the queen of the incremental improvement! Still trying to get to that 3800. Next year. But happy with my swim overall; I don't feel like I left anything in the pool.
Good for this year: Didn't have a coughing fit, didn't get psyched out, more or less stuck to my plan (drink of water every 600).
Bad for this year: Every time I tried to speed up, felt like I was going to vomit. Almost did vomit at the end. Need to figure out what that's about. Exercise-induced acid reflux? There was three hours in between my breakfast and my swim. Seems like that should be enough, but maybe not.
