So, this happened:
5 THORPE, IAN 29 SOPAC, NSW 1:50.79 1:49.16B 815
r:+0.77 25.15 51.78 (26.63)
1:19.87 (28.09) 1:49.16 (29.29)
I dare say that is a good prelim time.
Also, Huegill is looking strong in the semis of my favorite non-Olympic event:
1 HUEGILL, GEOFFR 33 SOPAC, NSW 23.74 23.58 860
The elevators in our building have little TVs in them. As I was riding up this morning one of the "latest" headlines was that Thorpe failed to qualify in the 200m free. I didn't know if I should be pleased that this fact rose to the level of being a headline or disappointed that it took them almost a week to mention it.
Maybe next week they will report that Duke's men's basketball team failed to win their first round game in the NCAA tournament. :D

Today's 100 fly semifinal was the last 2012 chance for Michael Klim's comeback. He made it to the semis in the 100 free and 100 fly but did not make it to the finals.
During Gary Hall Jr.'s chat session yesterday I asked him what he thought about Ian Thorpe's comeback attempt. To paraphrase, he said he gives him props for trying, but Ian's gotten slower while everyone else has gotten faster. He said he had the feeling even Ian didn't really think he was going to make it. I think he's right about this. I got the impression Ian thinks he got back in the pool a little too late to get back to where he needed to be. I do hope Ian keeps at it and make Worlds next year.
Wasn't he training for over a year? That's a lot of time to train for the 100 free
Is it, though, if you've been completely out of the water for a few years? Thorpe probably wasn't in the same kind of shape as someone like Brendan Hansen who was able to get back much more quickly. If you've seen photos of Thorpe before his comeback it was pretty clear he was really out of shape.

Wasn't he training for over a year? That's a lot of time to train for the 100 free, and Thorpe has a history of being very fast in the 100. I think his coach just failed to prepare him properly.

I think he's right about not really believing...
On another note, there are some great times coming from the French trials too - Agnel 1.44 200 free, Camille Muffat 1.54/4.02 in the women's, forget his name, but 52.7 in the men's backstroke....
The pool is going to be on fire this summer!!
