So, this happened:
5 THORPE, IAN 29 SOPAC, NSW 1:50.79 1:49.16B 815
r:+0.77 25.15 51.78 (26.63)
1:19.87 (28.09) 1:49.16 (29.29)
I dare say that is a good prelim time.
Also, Huegill is looking strong in the semis of my favorite non-Olympic event:

A good overall time and a good result for Thorpe. Bad splitting though. 5.6 seconds difference between 100's is not good. If he was just cruising into the finish because it was prelims, well then ok. We'll see if his semifinal swim is better.
Looks like he went out too fast. Or maybe he wanted clear water or he was so excited he got ahead of himself. Either way he needs to split it better.
Or he took his foot off the gas because he knew he was in.

Or he's not in the kind of shape he's hoped he'd been in!! :D Maybe shouldn't have taken so much time off...
That seems to be the opinion of people who watched the race in person. We'll have a much better idea after the semis. I suspect the guy knows a thing or two about pacing and was playing around a bit. I'm counting on there being more under the hood than he's been letting on in the press.
Aside from Thorpe's failure to progress, there were some great swims by "old-timers" and newcomers. Though she won't make the team this year in the 400, watch out in 2016 for this 14 year old who posted an impressive 3rd place time:
3 FAIRWEATHER, REMY 14 KAWANA WATERS 4:10.28 4:08.63A 889 r:+0.79 28.96 1:00.10 (31.14) 1:31.33 (31.23) 2:03.05 (31.72) 2:34.87 (31.82) 3:06.71 (31.84) 3:38.62 (31.91) 4:08.63 (30.01)She comes into the meet seeded 4th in the 800 (to be swum Tuesday) and she took down two of the faster 800 seeds in the 400. I predict she'll get under 8:30 easily and take a slot for London.

I hope so. The Olympics will be more fun if he's there. A Phelps-Thorpe-Biedermann-Lochte showdown in the 2free would be the biggest race since the Phelps-Thorpe-Hoogie-Hackett showdown!

... but
A Phelps-Thorpe-Biedermann-Lochte showdown in the 2free would be the biggest race since the Phelps-Thorpe-Hoogie-Hackett showdown! ... I doubt Thorpe will be good enough to contend with Lochte or Phelps ... maybe better than Biedermann.
