100 X 100 + 10,000 Question

Apprently there is a group of Masters Swimmers in NY. They do a 100 Yard X 100 times swim. I take it that this is 100 repeats of 100 yards. What is the repeat time? Every 2 min. 3 min? Think this workout is super for long distance training.
  • My team did 100 x 100 LCM last week, and I blogged about it here: forums.usms.org/blog.php 2 lanes finished in 2:45, another a few minutes later, and my lane in 3:02. As you can see we held a steady interval for the first 60, then varied it a bit.
  • Cambridge Masters has grown a bit of a tradition of 100x100 on New Year's Eve day. We do it as a fundraiser for the Marly Pineda Memorial Scholarship at Smith College. Marly was an assistant coach for our team until she was fatally wounded in a bicycle accident a couple years ago. This year, we had 88 people show up. Across 14 lanes of swimming, we had all intervals from 1:20 to 1:55 swimming. We put it all up on the scoreboard to help us count. -Rick
  • Different groups will do it differently. I think the prototypical hundred hundreds is 100 x 100 on a 100s interval, or "one hundred hundreds on a hundred". When I did it a couple times with the NASA group at Northwestern they swam on a 1:30 interval. That was generally too fast for me, so I'd mostly do 75s, every now and then doing a few 100s.
  • The first time I did this was on a 2:00 interval, second time I did a 1:40 interval, third time half was 1:30, half was 1:45. I'm not good at distance, but it's a neat thing to accomplish if you've got the time and desire, I've also bailed on the set a few times.
  • Sometimes the 100s are not all straight swims but include kicking, strokes, drills, etc. (with suitable non-freestyle swim intervals).
  • i did 10x10x100scm. I started with 1:30 + 30sec efter 10, then had to go up to 1:35. next year I will do the 1:40 or 100 sec and mix in som IM's since doing them all free got boring.

In high school the captain of our team (Bobby Hackett class of '76) did a (100) 100's on a minute. He and Brian Goodell from Mission Viejo were the best distance swimmers in the world at that time. The coach timed him on every single one and he got faster as the set went on. He was holding :53's towards the end and finished with a :52. That's still hard to imagine anyone doing stuff like this. There's a book called "Four Champions and One Gold Medal". This is one of several unbelievable practices which are mentioned in it.

  • How many people in the world could do that now? Amazing that he did it over 35 years ago. I read somewhere that Eva Fabian does a set of 50 x 200 on 2:00 or 2:05. I'll try to find where I read that.
