Kate Ledecky, 14 of Curl-Burke, broke 2 13-14 NAG yards records at the
5th Annual National Age Group Team Challenge held at the Germantown Indoor Swim Center Nov 12-13.
She broke a 33-year-old record in the 500 freestyle 4:35.14 held by Sippy Woodhead from 1978 4:39.94
Then she went 9:29.81 in the 1,000 free breaking Michelle Richardson's 9:33.39, from 1984
Katie has OT cuts in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 free & will definitely be one to watch at trials.

Girls tend to mature physically much earlier than boys, and they have a tendency to be better at distance events to boot. she is near the top of her game, while boys at this age are still developing strength. Same boy in two years will be way faster.
I remember swimming in HS, I barely beat the top girls, and sometimes did not at all. Once I went to college, I found that my times were better than Olympic women's times for the same events. That has ceased over the last 40 years.
Still a big drop for her, but could we see Ledecky break the 15 minute barrier? She's just got to knock off one second per 100.
I think we might. I wouldn't bet against Katie, that's for sure.

Of course, but just look up a few posts and you'll see a 15 year old boy recently swam a 19.55 50 free. There are lots of very quick teenage boys out there. And I hope Ledecky is not "near the top of her game." I'd love to see her continue to improve, but I do admit the history of the sport is littered with girls/women who could never improve on their times from their teenage years. I'm hoping the advent of professional swimming is starting to change that.
It would have been a pretty tight finish without Katie swimming:
LEDECKY Katie: 15:15.17
VROOMAN Lindsay: 15:54.682 (39.51)
SUTTON Chloe:15:57.45 (42.28)
TWICHELL Ashley:15:59.44 (44.27)
Granted things are likely to change after Junior Nationals, but as of today Ledecky has the fastest time in the US for a sixteen year old regardless of sex. The fastest boy is at 15:23. I bet that doesn't happen often!
no girl will come close to her at njo's.
and fyi, her having the fastest time for a 16yo is the ONLY time in history it has happened.
but to put it into perspective, her new WR in the 1500 would get herself lapped by the men (yang is just 4 years older). long course.
she has some super amazing times and swims so far. i hope she keeps it up.
the same medal, usually less fame, double the workout and a race that takes 30x longer than the winner of the 50.
ld is a cruel life.
the 15yo boy from my team just went 4:24 in the 500 last night and is better in the mile. he's entered in 15:25.
i am thinking there may be several boys that go faster than her. but as of last week she was faster.
as far as girls go.....um...her WR in the 1500 kinda puts the stamp on no female being faster.

I agree however in your other post you said "and fyi, her having the fastest time for a 16yo is the ONLY time in history it has happened."
This statement would be true if you were talking about the last 45 years. Debbie Meyer in 1968 set American Records in the 200, 500, and the 1650 Free at the 1968 Short Course Nationals and she was 4 months shy of being 16. In the summer of 1968 she set World Records in the 400 Free, 800 Free, and 1500 LCM Free.
Janet Evans did not set American Records in 500, 1000, and 1650 Free when she was 16 but set World Records in the 800 Free, and 1500 Free LCM when she was 16 years old at the 1987 Nationals in Clovis. When she set the 1500 Free World Record in 1987 at 16:00.73, her SCY time in the 1650 Free was 15:56.53 which at that time was 10 seconds from the American Record at that time which was 15:46.54 by Tiffany Cohen. If you look at the comparison of the short course and long course times it seems that you would go a lot faster than 4 seconds between the courses. I remember reading that Janet was under 5 feet and weighed 90 pounds when she swam that year and because of this in short course races she would not get the advantages on turns that other swimmers got that were bigger and taller.
So Katie Ledecky does have company as a 16 year old as far as swimming history is concerned.
