  • the 15yo boy from my team just went 4:24 in the 500 last night and is better in the mile. he's entered in 15:25. i am thinking there may be several boys that go faster than her. but as of last week she was faster. as far as girls go.....um...her WR in the 1500 kinda puts the stamp on no female being faster. I agree however in your other post you said "and fyi, her having the fastest time for a 16yo is the ONLY time in history it has happened." This statement would be true if you were talking about the last 45 years. Debbie Meyer in 1968 set American Records in the 200, 500, and the 1650 Free at the 1968 Short Course Nationals and she was 4 months shy of being 16. In the summer of 1968 she set World Records in the 400 Free, 800 Free, and 1500 LCM Free. Janet Evans did not set American Records in 500, 1000, and 1650 Free when she was 16 but set World Records in the 800 Free, and 1500 Free LCM when she was 16 years old at the 1987 Nationals in Clovis. When she set the 1500 Free World Record in 1987 at 16:00.73, her SCY time in the 1650 Free was 15:56.53 which at that time was 10 seconds from the American Record at that time which was 15:46.54 by Tiffany Cohen. If you look at the comparison of the short course and long course times it seems that you would go a lot faster than 4 seconds between the courses. I remember reading that Janet was under 5 feet and weighed 90 pounds when she swam that year and because of this in short course races she would not get the advantages on turns that other swimmers got that were bigger and taller. So Katie Ledecky does have company as a 16 year old as far as swimming history is concerned.
