Legal relay exchange?

So here's a crazy idea for relay exchanges for swimming.. Lay a towel right by the deck so when the swimmer is finishing his leg, the guy going next does a running start and dives right off the deck. Is it legal?
  • It doesn't say anything about how that start must be performed. It does say you can start from the deck, so why can't you do a running start? I think we're on to something here. We do this all the time anyway in the college Alumni Meets anyway. It adds a little fun too!!
  • This is certainly the rule they would use to DQ you for attempting a running start: 102.15.3 Any swimmer who acts in an unsportsmanlike or unsafe manner within the swimming venue may be considered for appropriate action or penalty by the referee.
  • This is certainly the rule they would use to DQ you for attempting a running start: I've heard of running-start relays in swimming but I've never actually seen it happen. I think anyone who is considering it should clear it with the referee and the lifeguard before doing it. At some facilities, there is simply no way to do this safely.

The key point I made with him was never, ever, ever run on the pool deck. Allowing it in competition will spoil any respect he has for his grandpa. :cane: "Look, Grandpa. The big kids run on the pool deck!" :D S

  • We do of course set out the long non-slip mats prior to our running starts at the Alumni Meet... That sounds like fun. Just don't mistime it and land on the guy in the water! With the right pool setup doing a start from the diving board might be fun, too. Bonus points for the 3 meter board.

I've done "racing dives" from the 1 meter springboard playing around while I was working at the college pool years ago. Takes a lot of practice to get the timing right to get the right linear distance and angle though. A lot of the time you'll end up over rotating though, and this can be painful :bitching:
  • If it were at all legal someone in the Olympics would have given it a go!
  • In NCAA it is legal to do a walking start, but you still have to be on the block.

We did 15 minute relays with running starts at Clovis North a few times. 5 people per team and it's a never ending relay until coach says stop. You get tired having to climb out, back up, sprint on deck to a flying start then sprint a 25, but doing it every minute or so for 15 minutes.
