FRUSTRATED..I can't find loyal swimming buddies!

I'm beyond bored swimming on my own. Even though I have started an adult (unofficial Master's) team at my local YMCA, there are MAX, 5 of us....and usually not all at once...Plus we only practice ONCE A WEEK, on Saturday mornings. It's kind of a joke! Where the heck do I live that I can't find a bunch of GOOD adult competitive swimmers to swim with...ones that want to do some serious workouts even during the week???????????? Sorry. Just venting!:rant3: If any of you live in Delaware, Maryland or even PA, COME SWIM WITH ME!!!!!!!!!!:wiggle:
  • Wow, Swimalison! Your situation literally mirrors mine - the YMCA, starting the team, once a week, etc. It sure is a challenge to swim on your own. On the other hand, the nice thing is that you can customize your workout to do what you want to do instead of conforming to somebody else's workout. Training is becoming more and more individualized. I used to train with a girl that was exactly the same age and swam the very same events in college. I actually started doing better after she moved away because our workouts were more like races instead of just a workout. I was leaving my races in the practice pool. When I did triathlons, I used an online coach and found this to be extremely helpful. I actually did much better training on my own and through the coach then training with a group. I'd get too competitive in the group and overtrain. Anyway, I don't know if any of this helps, but I can tell you I sure can relate!! :agree: I'm beyond bored swimming on my own. • I just love swimming on a team with a coach to push me. I stop too much on my own...I love the competitive feel to a team, or at least someone at my level to swim with occasionally. Oh well. I'll live, I guess...hehe. Or get the heck out of here and move to city that has a good Master's swim team, right? Where are you, btw? Do you swim with a Master's team now? Wow, Swimalison! • If there isn't a group locally check out the kids teams in the area. I swam with the kids team this past year and saw huge time drops and improvement. Now I am doing 4 days on my own and 2 days with the kids.

Now I am doing 4 days on my own and 2 days with the kids. Yeah someone else told me they do this as well. IDK. These 16 year olds would be like "who is this old bag swimming with us?". Even though I know I could keep up with them fine... I'd rather have my age swimmers swim with me
  • Alison, even though they may think "who is this old bag" (as you said), they really have no concept of age. A few years back I swam with my old high school team for one season. One day one of the kids asked me, "How old are you anyway?" When I responded that I was 33, he said "Wow! I thought you were like 19 or something." Besides, just thinkk of what you are teaching them by swimming with them. I never knew Masters Swimming existed when I was that age.
  • Yeah? I can ask I suppose.. I think I did mention it to the coach before and he didn't act like I was allowed/wanted me to swim with his group! I'm 36 too , btw...so I suppose we aren't old bags yet.hehe.:D Thanks for the encouragement. But wouldn't you rather be on a Master's team, if you could choose? I'd just love a team that we can all go to meets together, ya know..hang out..party.hehe.kidding. Thanks again!!! Will let you know my progress. In the meantime, back in the pool I go tomorrow..ALONE!! Er... I gotta back Donna on this. I LOVE swimming with the kids. Also huge time drops for me. I've never been in better shape. Perhaps I'm in La La land, but the kiddos give me TONS of verbal encouragement at meets and practices AND they are very mature, serious and focused. If I want to focus on a skill, I can go last in the lane. If I want to race, I can go first or heck, even last - always plenty of people to race if I so wish. It's up to me. I'll be 36 next week. I never gave the kids enough credit in the past. They have been nothing but polite, encouraging, and mature. I learn something new from them every day. Now if I can just get some of the masters folks to do the same. . . Won't lie though - it was hard physically and mentally at first. I just stuck with it and discovered something amazing.

sounds creepy all these old people loving swimming with the kids, but i know what you mean. i often do mornings with my old club. im 22 and most of the others are a good 6-8 years younger than me. but you know they love it just as much as i do, them swimming with a senior seems to make them work harder. they all know who i am coz ive been at the club, oh 17 years now, so i was here when they joined, they all have a subtle respect for me which is good. im a conciencious, hard working type of guy...always listens when the coach talks, never afraid to ask questions. i like to think some of this rubs off on the younger ones (some of whom have a bit too much energy and mess around in the pool). ill encourage and push them as hard as i can too....plus we seem to have some good banter even though some of my comments/jokes fly so far above their heads its not funny (not the sharpest bunch of people to be honest) its wierd, sometimes the coach can tell someone to stop being lazy and missing out lengths and they wont listen. then when i say "h'away man, lets do this!!!" they go right away. and of course.... they just cant tolerate an old boy like me whipping them in practice races or sprint sets, so they try extra hard to try put me to shame lol. they easily overshadow me at horribly long sets like 6x400m FC, i just havent got the will or energy for those anymore lol but i bring it to em in the sprint work!
  • Alison, you may not stick out like you think! One of the national girls told me this summer, "My mom asked who the new girl @ practice was and I told her you were in your 20s . My mom said she couldn't believe it." Oh and I do meets w/ the kids AND masters so I don't feel deprived in any area. I have the option to swim with masters teams or the kids. I had heard that some masters swam with the kids so I thought, "Why not?" I feel that I have to give 100% with the kids just to set a good example. Why not put differences aside (age is just a number) and try something new? Alex, that's a great story! But I don't think that 22 is old! :laugh2: Yeah, ok When the team at the YMCA here starts back soon I may ask:o But again, I think that coach didn't want me there! Err... Oh well. I will keep working on this Master's team!

Too funny how they listen to you!!! You probably don't stick out like a sore thumb like I would at 37 years old!!!
