Thought I'd spill the beans on my friend Rendy Lynn Opdyke's swim this weekend. She was the first recorded woman to swim from Santa Cruz Island to the mainland and the fastest to make the longer 28+ mile crossing finishing in 10:51! Thats some serious swimming! I'm sure the rest of the story will be up at santabarbarachannelswim.org soon. There is an increasing interest in the cold & rough channel this year!

I got an email from one of Rendy's friends yesterday along with some pictures. That is one amazing swim; Rendy is one fast and strong swimmer. I send my congratulations to her. 28 miles is a very, very long way. donna

Donna When is your big swim happening?
  • You folks who do these swims are my total ROLE MODELS!!! In aiming for my five miler, I think of you and think if they can do what they're doing, I can manage five miles! I'll be thinking of you when I set off on my swim. Congrats to Rendy who sounds awesome! Also sdswimmer has some pretty impressive credentials as does Donna... and btw, I notice that women seem to be doing great in long distance swimming competition. I heard that the first two finishers overall in the Manhattan swim were women! Edited to add link. Soooo, put your hands together for these terrific wimmenfolk!!! :applaud::applaud::applaud:

And it didn’t hurt that in 1999 we had great conditions for the race.

  • Are you planning another MIMS anytime soon?I would love to swim the MIMS again, it is a great event. However, life has a way of getting in the way of my marathon swimming training. But maybe in a few years, I’ll get back in distance shape and do it again.

Some cheers also for our overly modest admin! :cheerleader: Hey Rob, sorry I somehow missed that the first time around... was looking for this year's results, so my one-track mind (with trains coming in both directions, ha!) slid over what was on the screen. But awesome race! Are you planning another MIMS anytime soon?

Hi Ron Lockman, Thanks for asking. August or September of 2008. I've got about 13 months left in training. Am consistently swimming 6 miles each day now, and the swim is 20.6 miles, not 18.6 as I was told!! just my luck!! Oh, well!!
