I'm new to masters workouts and need some help understanding the terminology and timing of drills. Are there any good resources for a newbie?
I don't know a general list of terms and their definitions, but if you want to post a list of terms that are unclear, someone here can define them for you.
Best option for drills is a coach, second best is a fellow swimmer who swam competitively as a kid and finally youtube/videos.
There are plenty of books that cover drills, but without having experienced the basics first hand, it is difficult to get much out of them.
Feel free to ask questions about drills, people here can certainly answer questions about specific aspects of a drill and possibly help you find youtube videos of examples for your general questions.
Thanks. These look like great resources. I misunderstood the first "ladder" I did in one of my classes and ended up swimming 7-50's instead of working up to 4-50's and then back down.
Here's a couple of places you might go to start:

Thank you. There were only two people in class on Tuesday, and the other one left after 30 minutes, so I was able to get some one-on-one time with the coach. I have a book with drills in it, but I do not understand most of the drills. I'll keep your tip in mind about asking for help here and will start keeping a list of terms that I do not understand.

A coach is a great resource. A 4 second inperson visual might take 30 minutes of typing and thought to explain.
Drills are meant to correct a flaw, or focus attention on an aspect of the stroke. There is no need to worry about all the drills in your book right now, focusing on a few until you mastered them will be much more beneficial. Then add an new one when you are bored or need to focus on another area of your stroke.

You might look at the blog entry from hoodoo7 entitled Calculus for a humorous look at swimming terminology:

One on one with your coach is a great way to get the terms in real use! Ask coach each time for one more set of something different to learn. It takes a while.
