The doping questions have started... swimnews.com/.../9694
*sigh* and so what goes around comes around. There is the harm done to the sport when doping happens. Then there is another kind of harm where every amazing swim falls under suspicion. The two are connected, but we could also just assume innocence (whether of a Chinese swimmer or an American one) until proven guilty.
Overall, it was a touch schedule to pull off successfully. Well, at least, he got 2 more golds. I don't think that he needed to be knocked down. In swimming, sometimes it is not about who put the more work in. It just might be more about who is the freshest to put in the best performance. If he trains for Rio, he will have to tweak some things in his training. He could be too bulked up for swimming. Also, he have to drop an event or two. Or, Florida might to tweak their program.
According to the latest reports, Lochte is going to move to Los Angeles after the Olympics so Florida will not have to do anything. That means he will swim for maybe Salo or Fullerton, if they still have a group. Tyler Clary is leaving that area and moving back to Michigan to train in Ann Arbor and finish his college degree at Univ. of Michigan.
Both of Lochte and Clary were on the Today Show this morning and Ryan was questioned about how successful he felt he did at these Olympics. He said he was proud of his 5 medals and he worked real hard the last 4 years and said he though it was hard on him he plans on doing it again in preparation for Rio.
Ryan was reminded that he told Matt Lauer that he said he wanted the headlines to read he took over the Olympics back 4 weeks ago after trials and Matt asked him if he think he accomplished that? He said he will let the press decide and did not answer the queston.
When Tyler Clary was interviewed, he was just boasting with confidence. He said he will swim the next 4 years and has plans to swim in Rio and that this gold medal that he won is the answer to all of the hard work that he has put in the last 4 years and that can never be taken away from him. Nothing was asked or said about comments about Michael Phelps work ethic and I think that has now died.
With Michael Phelps retiring you might think it would be easier for Ryan in the future but it will not be with the presence of Tyler Clary and that is the next big rivalry in swimming. They cross in 2 events (200 Back and 400 IM) and might cross in two others (200 IM and 200 Fly) but its highly unlikely in the 200 Fly because Lochte has not swam that event much but maybe the 200 IM but Clary has stayed away from that event and if that is on the Olympic program as a final on the same day, then he will not do the 200 IM.
This kind of reminds me of when Ryan Lochte beat Aaron Peirsol in the 200 Back in 2007 and again in 2008 and this maybe a changing of the guard in this event. We will have to wait and see.

This is why cheating is such a pernicious thing - it eats away at everyone's trust and casts a shadow even over the people who play by the rules.
A lot of it probably has to do with the enormous financial incentives to win and the whole business mentality around sports.
(And we've seen a wee bit of cheating in the business/financial world as well recently, if I recall correctly - not to open one of these: :worms:)
Now for the "Important" Olympic Swimming News
My son only has time for one-night stands': Ryan Lochte's MOTHER spills on Olympic heartthrob's bachelor lifestyle. The 27-year-old Olympian himself also revealed he prefers his women wearing his own 'long-sleeve button-down shirts and that's all'

:lmao:
I think Troy has been a great coach for Ryan for several years now, but mixing it up & going to California just might be what he needs. A fresh perspective & different training regimen might be just what the doctor ordered - after all at the next Olympics he will be what? almost 32 years old? I know how hard it is for me to race people who are 10 years younger - at that level, it's got to be just as hard. The older we get, the more "little things" can interfere with your training & racing performance. My heart just goes out to him on that 200 backstroke. I think he did extremely well on the 2 IM, all considering - and he's certainly beat Phelps in major competitions in that event in the past. Yesterday just wasn't his day. :(

Possibly he just missed his taper, tho that doesn't explain his very good 400 IM. Maybe losing at the end of the relay just rattled his confidence enough to slow him down a little.
Other than the 400 IM, he was faster a year ago at Wolds, right? (I don't remember if he did 200 back, but he was def faster in the 200 IM and free.)

But even in that event he tightened up at the end. Of course let's keep in mind this was hardly a disaster for Lochte. Obviously it wasn't the meet he hoped to have, but he did medal in all his events except the 200 free. He was just a tad off.
Last year at Worlds he was 1:52.96 in the 200 back and 1:54.00 in the IM. This year 1:53.94 and 1:54.90, but those two events were not on the same night last year. Also keep in mind the stroke 50s are contested at Worlds, so that makes the finals sessions slightly longer.
