Possibly he just missed his taper, tho that doesn't explain his very good 400 IM. But even in that event he tightened up at the end. Of course let's keep in mind this was hardly a disaster for Lochte. Obviously it wasn't the meet he hoped to have, but he did medal in all his events except the 200 free. He was just a tad off. Last year at Worlds he was 1:52.96 in the 200 back and 1:54.00 in the IM. This year 1:53.94 and 1:54.90, but those two events were not on the same night last year. Also keep in mind the stroke 50s are contested at Worlds, so that makes the finals sessions slightly longer.
