Michael Phelps and a bong? Is there any truth to this?

are we sure that's Phelps? If true, he seems to have a habit of screwing up in the very next Novembers after Olympics... anyone here from the UK? How reputable is "news of the world"? How could he be so careless?
  • pass the brownies. To your kid? Nope, you don't have one ... lol
  • Athlete hero worship is whats wrong with our society. This is good to know cause a few other preachers have been telling us for a year or so now that tech suits are what is wrong with our society.
  • Funny, a couple of you have posted about Phelp's smarts or lack thereof. I have been mulling this over in my mind and I think I may agree. While he seems to have swimming savvy, and racing smarts galore, I wonder about his common sense and general ability to communicate well. I think intelligence comes in many different forms, but Michael seems to be lacking in a few of the more important land-based varieties...
  • I have more wisdom than my dad? Highly doubtful. He has experienced a lot more in life and thus gained wisdom more than I. Im not saying when I screw up it makes it anymore right. Just that im not perfect. I think the knee jerk reaction that our elders are always wiser is largely a societal myth or norm that is not always accurate. Yes, sometimes they have better judgment and experience. Other times, they act like blithering idiots too and are, in fact, less smart. I think it's better to treat all people, including elders, with respect. But automatic genuflecting and/or deferring to another's supposed wisdom can stifle independent thinking and creativity. At least Michael is smart enough to always wear tech suits.

  • I don't really mean to start up the whole "legalize it" argument, but who really cares. It is estimated that something like 70% of high school age children try it at least once, and a good portion overall are at least recreational users. For the record, I am not a user but fall into the "have tried it" category. It has been pretty obvious that Phelps is on a bit of a post Olympic party binge the past few months - hanging with celebs, dating Vegas "cocktail waitresses", and all in all making up for the three solid years of nothing but training he was doing leading up to the event. No body cares if Snoop Dog or Willie Nelson does it, but if Phelps takes a hit we should crucify him?? Drinking and driving is the bad one - it can actually hurt or kill other people. The bong hit - at worst we might see some slightly reduced lung capacity at the 2012 games!
  • He's 23 years old and he made a mistake. If you've never made a mistake, then start throwing stones, if you have, you have no reason to judge. I dont care if he's a public figure, he's still human. And as long as its not performance enhancing and endangering other people, well let them live their lives. At least he's not pulling guns at clubs like a certain New York Giants receiver. I bet every person on here has made a mistake but I doubt any of us were making money off endorsements at the time. Nor were we public figures. Nor were we Olympic athletes. He chose to stay in a sport that he excels at. He chose to take on endorsements. With those choices come responsibilities to stay at a certain level. He dipped below that level by being caught taking a bong hit.
  • Someone actually said on TV today that his pot use will lead to steriod use. Sorry, Pot use doesn't lead to steroid use. If you are messed up in the head, it will lead to cocaine or heroin. Of course, I don't know for sure since I am not a scientist or psychologist.
  • He worked really hard for three years, he's just a kid, it's just a mistake, Snoop does it and no one cares, it's just pot, no one was hurt, 70% of kids do it, at least he didn't shoot someone - wow, Floyd Landis' crack team of excuse artists has nothing on you guys.
  • The bottom line is that he did something stupid. I care only enough to be a little disappointed. It doesn't matter to me that the dingleberry smoked some pot. I've done worse! It SHOULD cost him. He knowingly took money in the form of sponsorships that hold him to a higher standard and he will more than likely lose some of those sponsorships. I feel it should cost him more than it will, but who am I? I am continually amazed at some of the idiotic things that people, who seemingly have the world at their fingertips, will do to throw away money and the adoration of their fans. Burress and Vick jump immediately to mind. The act itself, in my opinion, is insignificant. People have to explain screwed up things to their kids all the time. The fact that he signed up for his status as a role model, and signed some big, fat checks at the same time, is what makes this a big deal! I say foreclose on his million dollar harbor-front home! Give it to me!:blah::blah::blah:
