Making a cold tolerable

I have had a cold for the past 6 days and for the last two I've found a combination of drugs that have made it tolerable enough to let me swim. I take Nyquil (generic kind) an hour before bedtime and Musinex D just before I leave for work. At approximately 5pm, I take a 1/2 dose of the Musinex D. I feel good enough to practice for a little while (45 min). If you have things that work for you please pass them along. Thanks, Coach T.
  • My cold hit yesterday but the amazing thing I have found is that my congestion disappears when I am in the water swimming but by the time I get back to the locker room I am stuffed up again. Something about chlorine I guess...
  • get a neti pot and you probably won't have to deal with one in the first place!

Hopefully your congestion wasn't left in a floating globule in the pool. I placed my hand in a "jellyfish" today. Spitting all that crud in the gutter is cool. Leaving it floating in the business area isn't.

I have the world's worst post-nasal drip when I get a cold, just like my paternal grandmother did. This can lead to endless violent coughing for the cold's duration. I've found that if I take 2000 mg of vitamin C 4 times a day it does absolute wonders for me. The only gotcha is that I have to start it the instant I suspect that I am coming down with a cold or it has little effect. In case I do miss my "window" and end up with the coughs, I use a prescription drug called Tussionex that is the only thing I've ever found that works safely for me. Codeine works, but like alot of people, I'm allergic to it. -LBJ

My junior college coach passed orange flavored vitamin C (mg ?) and besides tasting great after practice they seemed to stave-off colds. I have some C's in my cabinet and will start them again. It's been 7 days and my cough has significantly subsided and so has my post-nasal drip (still there). Thanks! Coach T.

I found out over the years that if I don't nip the cold and it starts moving toward my chest, it often gets worse and may turn into bronchitis or pneumonia. I've found Nyquil relieves the symptoms and lets me sleep. An antihistamine, and I've tried Musinex D this time, keeps me from coughing during the day (drink a lot of water and often). I learned that taking the drugs has kept me out of the doctors office so I'll keep taking them and try to keep refining my formula ( maybe I'll find a formula that doesn't require drugs).

I agree with you. Even with washing my hands an inordinate number of times per day, I still managed to pick up some nastiness during my vacation (thankfully at the tail-end). Unfortunately, I didn't have my full supply of meds on hand to begin my treatment, and I think it has drifted into bronchitis... Since my Mom is a doctor, I grew up with all kinds of meds around the house. In a large family, we'd have to be nearly on a deathbed to not go to school... I follow nearly the same philosophy now (good or bad, I don't know). I will say that after the first 20 minutes of swimming this morning I felt much better. The shorter sets (where I'd go horizontal/vertical more) gave me more problems.
  • I read an article about Serial Killers in Vanity Fair magazine years ago. This one guy said that after his crimes, he was so hyped up and excited that the only thing that would let him calm down again and get some sleep was Nyquil. I always wondered why Vicks didn't build an ad campaign around this. Nyquil, it's not just for serial killers (TM). Has USMS approached this company for a sponsorship deal? Stillwater, your jellyfish reference was the most disgusting floater description I've come across since Brooklyn whitefish. I might just have to take me a nip of Nyquil to get these images out of my mind.
