Clovis in 09??

So, now that we are on the countdown to May 09 - who is coming and what do you plan to swim? This will be my first US Master's National meet, and it happens to be happening in my back yard (at least very close to where I grew up and swam USA club). Over is San Luis Obispo now, but it's a short hop, skip, and jump over the foothills to Clovis!
  • East coast Ft Lauderdale 1998 LC Baltimore 2000 LC * Rutgers 2003 LC Savannah 2004 LC Ft Lauderdale 2005 SC * Coral Springs 2006 SC * Central Indianapolis 1998 SC Minneapolis 1999 LC Indianaplois 2000 SC * Cleveland 2002 LC * Indianapolis 2004 SC The Woodlands 2007 LC Austin TX 2008 SC * West Coast Santa Clara 1999 SC Santa Clara 2001 SC * Hawaii 2002 SC * Federal Way 2001 LC * Tempe 2003 SC * Mission Viejo 2005 LC * Federal Way 2007 SC * Mt Hood 2008 LC What would be really interesting (imo) is how many of the "selections" were "only one bid received". {The asterisks are events I attended - I started up again in 2000. I live in the SF Bay Area. Hawaii was great; we did 10 days on Maui afterwards. After Baltimore we went into DC for a day and did the tourist deal. Wife has relatives in Ohio so we spent a few days with them after the meet. For the rest of them, it was pretty much swim the meet and get back home (to work actually).}

Maybe Mike can illuminate.
  • I think I would divide it out like this: East coast Ft Lauderdale 1998 LC Baltimore 2000 LC Rutgers 2003 LC Savannah 2004 LC Ft Lauderdale 2005 SC Coral Springs 2006 SC Central Indianapolis 1998 SC Minneapolis 1999 LC Indianaplois 2000 SC Cleveland 20002 LC Indianapolis 2004 SC The Woodlands 2007 LC Austin TX 2008 SC West Coast Santa Clara 1999 SC Santa Clara 2001 SC Hawaii 2002 SC Federal Way 2001 LC Tempe 2003 SC Mission Viejo 2005 Lc Federal Way 2007 SC Mt Hood 2008 LC The northeast is vastly under-represented, but then again, I can't think of a single pool around here that would even be a viable option. :( Of course I live in a state with no 50 meter pools at all. They just had a local age group championship meet in Canada. Brown University hosted LCM way back, mid 80s maybe. How are things in Maine these days? I lived in Old Town for a while in the early 80's, swam at UMO. Biggest pool in the area then, is it still?
  • Ok I freely admit to being an idiot but aren't there tons of USS meets held all over the country with the same or more kids than a USMS nationals would ential? I keep hearing there are no pools on the east coast...am I missing something here? Geek...what's the situation in North Carolina? As everyone knows many of us would like to pay a visit to your backyard so you can have us all over for a BBQ.

Charlotte does have three 50 m X 25 yd pools. Two of them can have dual 25 yard courses but neither have the seating or warm-down that Nationals would require. There is a sweet new high tech pool in RTP, about 3 hours from here that is getting rave reviews. I haven't seen this place in person so can't comment as to whether it could hold a big national meet. As to regular meets, there is a well attended meet the last weekend of January every year here in Charlotte.
  • UGA has a wonderful facility and plenty of sitting room. Athens is a great college town with great weather in May. www.georgiaswimcamp.com/Camps.TAF

I haven't seen this place in person so can't comment as to whether it could hold a big national meet. It is very nice, indoor 50m pool (fast) with 25yd warmup pool. VA had our (USA-S) Senior Champs meet there. Lots of deck room for everyone. I don't think there would be any problem having USMS nationals there.
  • It's hardly an accurate east vs. west coast type of comparison when central states are lumped in with the east coast. The 40% figure is quite telling and perhaps why we have west vs non-west listings. It will be interesting to see what the attendance figures are for Clovis. Perhaps the attendees will come largely from that 40%? Considering that I have not seen anyone on this DF east of the Adirondaks (east of the Colorado River?) say that they will attend, it would probably be safe to presume that the California LMSCs will be heavily represented, as well as Oregon and Washington, bringing one club each. I will predict attendance of over 2200, and will not be surprised to see a new record set. I find it amusing that some people who have never been to the pool or area will not go because of (insert lame reason/excuse here). Go or don't. Whoever shows up will have a great time and (probably) swim fast. It is nationals, after all. If it were held in North Dakota, I would go. In fact, I did. Those searching the results for the last two nationals, I wasn't at either one, even though I wanted to go. Lame reason: I'm at the top of my age group. Real excuse: I was broken, torn shoulder tendon. I will be in Clovis, apparently not seeing most of this DF group, unless I break something else.

No excuse needed for me! I'm not going to Clovis because I prefer to go to Indy and only travel once a year. I affirmatively like and prefer LC. So why the hell should I break my neck getting to Bumblef*ck CA?! I would happily travel to GA or NC for a meet as well.

Paul, The issue isn't that there aren't facilities (at least in the DC area) that can run dual course SCY, it's that the ones that can, don't either have a) the deck space or b) the seperate warmup/down area. It seems that warmup/down areas are not as important to PVS as they are to USMS :toohurt: I wonder why???
