First we have to know a couple of things. What type of training are you doing? What is your time for 100 yards. How hard do you kick. Is your swim in the Ocean or in a pool. If you swim in salt water the kick is different then if you swim in a fresh water pool don't over kick in salt water. If you are swimming in the pool learn how to turn and be streamlined off the turns.

Is this a beach lifeguard job? If it is, you probably shouldn't be doing this. It doesn't sound like you have the swimming ability for it.
  • ok, thanks ill try it today. I dont have any problem swimming short distances but after a few laps i get really tired and i cant swim a 100 yard in 1:40 any more. So i guess i should just try some breathing exercises too. Sounds like endurance, which takes time to acquire, and possibly slowing down so you can get the feel of continuous swimming (or swimming shorter distances faster, or both). Endurance would also be useful for rowing the boat out to body, swimming one-handed back to shore while dragging the body, performing CPR, and dealing with customer issues. :drown: Regards, VB

We are mostly training in the ocean but some of the days we are in the pool and those are the days they do all the timing, so the 3/10 mile will be in the pool. I can swim the 100 yard in about 1:40 but its mainly just long distance that gives me trouble because i get so out of breath. And i dont kick real hard but i do kick. I doubt my form is real good because i just started swimming but im always in the ocean surfing and kiteboarding and stuff so my endurance isnt horrible its just not as good as it needs to be.

Your swim is nearly 600 yards. If you average 1.40 you would swim the swim in the 10 minutes. It is hard to learn technique over the internet but first start with the push off from the wall. Be streamlined, arms extended out front, hand over hand, shoulders touching your ears, chin almost touching your chest. Do a few kicks after the body is fully extended like an arrow. Let one arm drop to the catch and push the water til you touch your thigh. For begginner swimmers I encourage a touch about mid thigh. Let the body roll and when it gets to the thigh your hand at the thigh has to come out clean no splashes. When the first arm's hand is near your shoulder start with the other arm. When the first arm gets to the front don't slap the water. Then continue. Clean swimming is better then big splash swimming. Here is GoSwim videos lots of technique videos. I like the Kara Lynn Joyce freestyle video www.goswim.tv/.../videos.html
