It's not going to be as interesting as Ande's but I realized when I was powerlifting 10 years ago that this is the best way for me to track and evaluate my progress so here it is.

I think you could argue that some of the best distance swimmers are faster than the best sprinters....
look at the first 50/100/200 of the best 1500m, 400m, 800m swimmers. It's pretty dang close to the top times swam by the sprinters in their 50/100/200...all things considering--like the fact that they have another 1000m+ to swim.
I can't really say anything because I am/was a sprinter for so long...but I definitely have a new respect for those distance swimmers that go out in their first 100/200 as fast as I swim my individual 100/200 and keep nearly that pace for the entire race...I'm a long way from being that much of a distance swimmer:laugh2:
You're right. It's not a good plan. Never happen. Others have tried and failed. Distance is overrated; speed is awesome.
Take care of that heel! That sux.

No matter what anyone says a well balanced workout a little of everthing is the best way to go. Flippers should always be used sparingly and not during race season.
Paul it is surprising what we can do, even with an injury.
"Hello, 911? I'd like to report an attempted murder"
So there I was thinking that it might be a good idea to try other things. So I decided to drop by and work out with Fortress. OH....MY.....GOD... She is insane but in a good way. I don't remember my quads ever just BURNING like they did, even at the height of my powerlifting. I have no idea what we did in terms of distance I just know it hurt.
Oh, BTW to Mr Paul 'let's come up with something completely insane' Smith, we tried your V-scull/10 second power kick/SDK/sprint flutter kick 50s. I think we did 6 of them? I dunno, can't remember thru the pain. Ugh. Yes, they were different and YES, they hurt. But they were a very nice change of pace.
So this has caused me to rethink my current swimming fitness level. I had thought that I was about a 6.5-7 on a 1-10 scale but now, after dragging my sorry carcass from the pool, I think it's closer to a 5.
But, had fun, it was definately intense and definately what I need to work more of. And my admiration for Fortress and her level of dedication/effort continues to rise. Thanks for letting me suffer, Leslie :thhbbb:
But seriously, thanks for the workout. Believe it or not, I did enjoy it.

didn't know Leslie moonlighted as a dominatrix
did it hurt so good

Now, wait a minute here! Methinks Paul might be exaggerating just a tad. He's just not used to shooters and kicking. Apparently, "guys don't kick." Hmmm..... But he pointed his toes very nicely on the V sculling after I scolded him for cheating, so I think he can rival Paul Smith in the tutu competition. Plus, he did a couple of smoking 50s at the end of practice.
Hey, you're ruining the imagery I'm trying to create here. :rant3:
She's lying.
I was a complete wreck, all the energy just cruelly SUCKED from me by this cyborg-like kicking machine. :drown:
As for the 'guys don't kick' line, I think that was taken out of context. I meant THIS guy doesn't kick, yeah, yeah, that's the ticket. :bolt:

So funny to read this. I have a sliding (scale) downward for myself too. I used to think I was around an 8 of 10 (6 years ago). However, the more I swim and run into amazing swimmers, the lower I crawl on my scale so to speak. I'm feeling 4ish about now. Don't beat yourself up on it. There are some great swimmers out there. Sounds like you are working hard! Let's let eachother know when we feel we're at 8 or 9! :fish2:
:notworking:
These kinds of days come and go. Sometimes you gotta swim through it; other times you just gotta get out. Its just one day. Ain't gonna kill you. Sometimes rest is good, especially when you're racing 100 frees soon. :mooning::mooning:
I agree. I went to the pool yesterday after a run and felt like crap. I've been hitting it pretty hard the last couple weeks. I shortened my workout and left. I think it's just part of, blech, getting old and being masters. We're just not full of energy 24/7.
You're probably a bit down from your heel injury too. But remember, in masters, there's always another meet and another season. Are you going to swim the Tropical Splash? Can you go off the blocks and do effective flip turns with that heel?
