Amanda Beard in Playboy

Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy. How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?
  • I don't think the two are at all similar, other than the fact that a decision is being made. I do. I think they're both personal decisions that really shouldn't be anyone else's business (other than the spouse, if there is one). Anyway, how many swimmers have made enough money due to their status in the sport to legitimately retire after they're done swimming? Not many. Thorpe, Phelps, Beard and maybe Hoff are the ones I can think of. And none of them are really making that money by swimming. They are making that money by helping to sell products. Basically all Amanda is doing is help Playboy sell ads.

I'll pass on making any judgements. Amanda can do as she wishes, but we are all still allowed to have our opinions of her. My opinion is that its a "bad choice" (in the same sense I use that term in raising my children) for her, in a long line of what I consider bad choices. But they are her choices, and she is allowed to make them, and she gets to live with the consequences. But I do want to ask somewhat philosophically why SwimmingWorldMagazine.com seems to think this is news worth reporting? It surely is of interest based on the number of responses in this thread. It does not seem to have anything to do with swimming per se, although its about someone who swims. I found it interesting that they took a page out of Playboy's handbook and put a sampling of Amanda's swimming results in there as "gratuitous swimming news" (most recent result from 2004 as I recall) to justify posting it on the site. ...so, will it also be reported how many (underage) USAS and USMS members purchase this magazine and what they do with it? I suggest that they use some measure of "distance per stroke" as the gratuitous swimming tie in to the follow up. Just another bozo on this bus... Steve "Hot dog, groatcakes again" "Its all coming back to me like the hard fist at the end of a wet kiss" "If you push something hard enough, it will fall over"

Firesign fans: First pets I ever owned were named Porgie and Mudhead
  • I do. I think they're both personal decisions that really shouldn't be anyone else's business (other than the spouse, if there is one). You mean, kinda like a person should be able to make a personal decision to eat foods prepared with trans fats? That shouldn't be anyone else's business, right? Can't have it both ways, amigo. So, get really really good at swimming, get sponsors, set yourself up for life and, oh yeah, strip. You've definitely made it to the top of your sport when you can strip for money. There's nothing like posing naked to show the world you've made it.

Hi I know this sounds really corny, but I'd buy it just to read what they say about her! Thanks, Karen. That, then, will be my excuse. But hey! Wait a minute. I just realized I do NOT have to have an excuse! And I agree that swimsuits are really a joke, they leave nothing to the imagination- really the only questions left unanswered are: how does one shave their naughty bits, and what color's the nip?!? Now, I would NOt have thought of that, but I was going to say ........ what about moles (which in French are known as "grains de beauté", a.k.a. beauty spots)?

I believe I may have mentioned it on another thread related to SI Swimsuit Issue, but I have always found my favorite pics in the SISI to be those of real athletes. They're real and they're in shape for athletics, not for modeling. muppet speaks truth.

OK, question, as I got to thinking (for a change): Why is the Playboy symbol a rabbit (bunny)? Why not some other cute animal, like, say, a beaver? Sorry. I couldn't help it. Very a-propos. I'm just

Good for her if that's what she wanted to do. I'm not sure how this will come across to the parents of young swimmers out there. . . . But as an adult female swimmer, I admire her for having the guts and the bod to pull this off. Good for Playboy for actually breaking out of their standard mold and putting someone other than the standard Barbie blonde on the cover. To Playboy's credit, I do remember some of their non-standard blonde's in the past including Patty Davis. I know I will be sure to get this issue b/c she's on the cover. I hope they took the time to interview her.
