Swiminfo.com has released a post saying that Amanda Beard will be on the cover of the July issue for Playboy.
How do you think this will effect her image among the swimming communties? Will any of us purchase this issue because of her?
It always seems the last act of a desperate person and the pages of Playboy are replete with examples of celebs who have done this.
Geek, you raise a good point here. I wonder what the motivation was. Anyone know if she broke up with that NASCAR dude?
Much better to have Tom and Jerry electrocuting each other in cartoons, or Wile E. Coyote, tossing anvils onto a defenceless bird (or attempting to) or every damn show on Disney highlighting the importance of "dating" someone even for pre-teens,
Personally, I don't hold cartoon characters created a half century ago to the same standards as I do actual humans. I guess I'm lucky in that even my young kids know the difference between Wile E. Coyote and a swimming superstar.
My point is that it is very easy to explain cartoons doing funny and/or violent things to goofy music. It is much less easy to explain a person plastered on every swimming mag, including our US Swimming mag (geared to kids) now posing nude in a men's magazine.

True geek that I am, I'm just impressed that someone here besides me has heard of Firesign Theatre.... I still have "The Further Adventures of Nick Danger," on vinyl, no less....
I can quote most of "Nick Danger" from memory AND do all the voices as well.
"She's no fun - she fell right over."
"I'm Rocky Roccoco, at your cervix."
"Put down that pickle!"

I'm not sure Beckham has made the jump from athlete to nude mag model, yet anyway. This does nothing for her career or swimming. 98% of the people who buy this issue won't know she is a swimmer until (or if) they read her bio inside and, even then, probably won't give a rip.
But, she'll add a few hundred K $, maybe, to her bank account. Good for her.
I do not know why anyone would be concerned about her posing nude, With the swim wear everyone wears they may as well be nude anyway. Swim suits leave nothing to the imagination.
Yet I still plan to buy the magazine to confirm what I imagine Amanda looks like nude is actually true. :)

...I always liked, "Nick! Wake up! And stop hitting me!"

And , yeah, of course this is about the money. We can all talk about how money doesn't matter, but it does to all of us. Most of us wouldn't turn away the kind of money Amanda's being offered. Look, at this point in her career she's a model as much as a swimmer. Posing for Playboy is modeling; nothing more. She has a finite amount of time to capitalize on her looks, she might as well take advantage of that time.
In another thread several people mentioned how it's wrong to criticize someone's personal decision to be either a stay at home mom or a working mom. So how exactly is it different to criticize Amanda Bear's personal choice to appear in Playboy?

First, no one here has criticized her decision. I have merely stated that it is a tough one to explain to kids.
Let's not confuse making a decision about staying home verusus working with a decision to get naked in front of potentially millions of people for a spank mag. I don't think the two are at all similar, other than the fact that a decision is being made. I don't believe the first question out of my mouth if my wife (or me, yeck) wanted to pose nude would be, "how much am I going to make." I might be the second question, though.

Amanda also has her own clothing line too or one is coming out soon, or is that coming off? ;)
If she's that busy posing and designing, I wonder if she has time to get to practice?
